tlin Report post Posted December 29, 2015 Hey there - I've been trying bowhunting going on three years now. No success yet but love every chance I get to be outdoors and just enjoying time away. Short story - the times I've been out for deer, I've seen plenty of elk but no deer. When out last November (2014) on my elk tag (got drawn the first time I ever put in!), saw plenty of deer and no elk. I have a chance to head out this weekend with my brother. We were thinking of trying 4A since I have a place to stay close by. Is that just too plain cold? Would you recommend a different unit to concentrate on? We live in the SE Valley (Mesa/Gilbert) and would be willing to go anywhere we stand a reasonable chance. No scouting done this year, FYI. thx!!!
yotebuster Report post Posted December 29, 2015 You could stumble upon a big ol Muley up in the pj's or a monster coues along the canyon in 4a, but you're setting yourself up for a skunkin if you hunt up there. If you're looking to just see deer and get a chance at some stalks I'd look lower. Any of the units in the 20's will get you plenty of opportunities to see some bucks and lots of chances to make stalks. There's a chance of a monster in 4a but a much better chance of not seeing much other then elk!

tlin Report post Posted December 29, 2015 Thx guys. I'm in it for the meat so increasing my odds is more important to me than is a wall mount. I got my first ever deer the first week of December in Oklahoma on a friend's father's property (160 acres kept solely for hunting). It was a rifle hunt (also a first for me), FYI. His dad had what I consider to be a good perspective - get your first buck and don't worry about the size (relatively speaking, of course). Once that's done, each successive hunt should be one where you hold out for one larger than the last one (so you're always, over time, getting more selective as time goes on). As I've never gotten a deer with my bow, I'll take what I can get. I'd really like to get something in the freezer. Talking to my brother tomorrow - I'll think about this over night. While the lower elevations sound appealing those leave me camping in the cold. Hmmmm.
