6.5-06 opinions

Recommended Posts

If you got an old M-70 in 30-06 (1965-66) that's tired but the stock, scope, and trigger are good, and you got a crap load of 06 brass, plus a bunch of 6.5 140's sittin around. Is it worth a barrel swap? What are the cons to this round, especially if you shoot a lot? Barrel life?

I am building one for my dad off of a 270 savage, I like the looks of the numbers on this round. Excited to see what it can do at long range.

Thinking it'll be good at long range. I'm just wanting something different and figure this is my cheapest way to go. Also I'd like a new deer rifle, have had hand me downs all my life and want to make something my own. It'd pry see 800-1000 rounds a year maybe less.

I think life would be pretty good, but I didnt see any comments on that when i was looking into it. I have dies already and plenty of brass. Just need dad to re-retire so he has some time to play with it then Im going to place an order

Downsides?

None that I can think of.

Run an 8 twist barrel and do it in a Ackley (6.5/06 AI)

Have it throated for those 140 grainers and your golden.

I put one together on my pre 64 70 last spring after the original .270 fwt barrel was toast, Rock 1-8" 5R #2. Really like it so far, killed a large bull elk with it last fall.. For now I've settled on the Barnes 127 LRX for my hunting load. I've only shot about 250 rounds thru it so far. Friend has a bore scope so I'll check the throat in another hundred rounds or so to see how it looks.

I would go one step further and Ackley Improve it. I don't own a magnum rifle in any chambering because I have 6.5-06AI and it is capable of killing just about anything I want at any range I want to with ease. I am pushing 140 Berges at 3180 out a 26" Shaw 9 twist barrel and I can deliver almost 1200ft lbs of energy at 1000 yards with impact velocities of more than 1900 fps with only 4.5 minutes of wind drift in a 10mph wind. My rifle like yours is built on a Winchester model 70 that used to be a .30-06.

Why don't you just turn it into a .264 win mag? Get it with a 1:8 twist for the long bullets. Brass is available. And you can get a couple hundred more fps out of it. Lark

If you really plan on shooting 800-1000 rounds a year, you might want two different loads. A target load, and a hunting load. I could see the barrel only lasting 2-4 years with that volume of fast hunting loads.

But as a hunting rifle.....heck yeah!

that's about what I shoot now but out of the 06 and a 243. Figure if I do the 6.5-06 I'd shoot it more than the 243

6.5-06 ackley is what I plan to build someday.

Maybe 264 win mag if I use an existing rifle that is chambered for a mag bolt face.

If I get real froggy I might do a 6.5 weatherby when I shoot my 257 weatherbys barrel out which should probably happen in the next couple years.

All of these would be throated for 140gr bergers.

For one the bolt will need to be opened up to allow for the magnum case. Two, I haven't seen a .264 Win Mag do much more than I am capable of already with the AI case and the extra 8-10 grains more powder needed to get the same velocities isn't worth it to me.

As far as gains go the standard 6.5-06 is ballistically identical to the 6.5-284, so velocities of 2950 or so are about the max out of it. Might get a bit more but its starts to get hard on cases. The 6.5-06AI can achieve 3100 quite easily. As far as barrel life goes it's like anything else, more speed and more powder equals more barrel wear but I believe wholeheartedly that it is much easier on barrels than the .264 Win Mag. I don't target shoot with mine, I take it out once or twice a year to confirm drops and hunt with, so far the barrel has lasted as long as anything else I have. I am expecting at least 1500 rounds out of it before its time to set back. Thats a long time at 20 or 30 rounds a year.
