Base Layer

Recommended Posts

After my elk hunt this year, my merino base layer is absolutely trashed. Wondering what people use as a baselayer that won't get torn to shreds while busting some serious bush. Don't think purchasing a new Merino every hunt is the best idea. Don't need it to be super warm as my body is a furnace while packing in in these situations. Want it to be warm and wicking like the wool if at all possible...

Sounds to me like you need a more appropriate outer pant layer, base layers shouldn't be getting trashed from vegetation.

Gotcha, my bad. If you're shedding that much maybe you don't need a base layer to begin with, or I'd take off the base layer and put the tougher outer layer back on before I walked in brush with it exposed. Hope you find a solution.

I wear Kuiu 145 as my base layer with an old Cabela's button shirt w/2 breast pockets that stands up to the mean bushes in Az, when it is too hot for the base layer I shed it and put it in my pack an put on my old shirt, my camo may not match but I'm not tearing up high dollar gear.

I suggested to Kuiu they make a shirt to stand up to the bushes in Az, doubt they will do it but what the hey, I told them Az shreds their stuff

I have a medium weight cabelas brand set I use for hiking in and then I change into my heavier wool ones once I settle in and am not doing much more hiking. The cabelas ones aren't good enough for sitting out in the wind but they work for the hiking.

I love my Thermax base layer set I bought from Cabela's many moons ago. This stuff was made in USA, tough, and warm but light. The top is a henley with buttons you can undo. Has some kind of silver so it doesnt' stink up as fast as the UA heat gear tops I also use in milder conditions. Wish I could buy two more sets of it, but of course the did away with it quite a while ago.

When I have to do it over again I'll probably go the merino route or possibly a synthetic/merino blend.
