Navajo draw

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone drew any navajo tag. I drew an archery elk. My first bull tag ever and first elk tag for 11 years. I think the azgfd has it out for me, 11 years of putting in for only archery hunts and no tag. Well the navajo came through and im about as happy and excited as a guy can get

That is cool! How hard is it to draw a tag up there? How is the quality of the bulls? I mean, are you expecting to get a monster or just a good quality bull? Congrats and good luck!!

I used to hunt Monster mule deer bucks up there evry year. One of the last big buck areas in AZ. I have not hunted it in the last 4 years after a bad and pricy run in with a game warden up there. They make the law in the field as they want to. Great hunt and i wish you luck on a nice bull.

Younghunter...that's great that you got an elk tag and I know how excited you must be. Your first elk hunt ever and 19 yrs old. What I would give to have both! :D I probably don't have to tell you how important it is to put in your home work. I've gone though different fazes over the years, trophy or meat, and you will to. I know you would like to shoot a big elk, don't we all, but don't be influenced by what someone else wants you to shoot. When the right bull comes along you will know it. I won't go into it now but I have seen to many young hunters quit huinting because Dad wouldn't let his son or daugther shoot something because it wasn't what Dad wanted. I hope you shoot the biggest elk in the state but if not that will be ok to. Have a safe & enjoyable hunt. :D Keep a journal of your day's activities. Good luck!

I have hunted Elk at Camp Navajo exclusively for the last 6 years, and work with another guy who has hunted it for well over 10. The elk herd is quite substantial and there are alot of good bulls running around the depot. Unfortunately unless you have a valid security clearance you cannot hunt some of the better areas but do not let that discourage you as there are plenty of areas still available to hunt. Which hunt do you have? I will be hunting up there from teh 14th of Sept thru the 23rd of Sept as will the otehr guy I mentioned. If you would like a map and some insider info send me a PM and i will be happy to help you out. Congrats on the tag!!

Youngbuck........There's an offer you can't refuse from DotShot. Good luck!

DotShot.......That was extremely nice of you to offer youngbuck some information with his first hunt. May the hunting gods reward you and good luck on your hunt.

That Navajo hunt can be a very tough hunt. Elk arent as widespread over the Navajo Nation as some may think, and the key to having a good hunt is finding the small pockets of elk that may hold a single herd or two. Lots and lots of scouting never hurts. ;) Good luck on your hunt.

I have never hunted this area but i drew the tag with 3 others, who know the area well, 2 of which got really nice bulls 2 years ago. I have heard there are nice bulls but not a ton, regardless its a bull tag in my pocket. its for units 1-8 and 11-14.

From YOUR messages, it sounds like you drew your tag for the Navajo Res. and NOT Camp Navajo, right? What's the cost of non-tribal permit there now? -TONY

500 for that hunt sept 5-24 or $3500 for units 8, 9, 15, and 16, and they are also any elk tags

The $500 is not too bad for a rut hunt. Is that a marginal area, thus the reason for the huge price difference? -TONY

That is pretty much it in a nutshell. The elk can be tough to find, even during the middle of the rut. Especially on your own without extra help from someone that knows the area and has hunted it before. I might be mistaken, but I think that the higher priced "trophy" hunts require a Navajo guide on the hunt.

Like I said before... LOTS AND LOTS of scouting never hurt anyone :) . (Especially if you want to have a sucessful hunt) :P
