My brother has a GSH but he doesn't want to take it out in the desert. Are you hunting in the cactus and prickly pear, or you more grass lands and the lack of cactus ????

My quail spots have some prickly pear but mostly grassland about a foot tall. Rolling hills. Great area for gambles.

I hunt in and around cactus all the time. I try to avoid hunting areas with lots of cholla because my dog seems magnetize to it. But there is cactus in all 4 quail species habitat in Arizona. It seems you will come across it no matter where you hunt in AZ. I would invest in some Lewis dog boots. They do help but spines can still puncture them.

Quail will hold tight after they have seen hunters before usually. I rotate my 4 areas weekly to relieve the pressure. I locate a covey first thing in the morning and split it up. Once broken up birds will hold tight and my dog will point on singles the rest of the day. That's the best hunting there is when your dog locks in on a bird in cover.
