Reloading ???'s

Recommended Posts

I am looking to start reloading and have never done it in the past. I am looking for some pointers or for someone to point me in the right direction. What do I need to get started? What should I look for in equipment? How much equipment is necessary? I am looking to start loading both shotgun shells and centerfire ammo. Is one easier than the other? Where should I start? Thanks.

This is what I would recommend for metallic reloading:

1) RCBS Rockchucker Supreme press

2) RCBS Chargemaster 1500 electronic scale combo (better/more convenient than a manual powder scale, trickler, scoops and powder throw)

3) case trimmer

4) deburring tool

5) loading block (Midway has cartridge specific ones that work better than the one size fits all)

6) Hand primer-

7) Powder funnel

8) Hornady/Stoney Point oal guage and modified case

9) Hornady/Stoney Point bullet Comparator- for bullet seating depth

10) Hornady One Shot spray lube (easier than lube pad)

11) dies (sizing and bullet seating - 2 die set)

12) RCBS shell holder for press

13) Hornady reloading manual (good info on reloading steps)

The RCBS Advanced RockChucker Supreme Reloading Kit includes items 1-7.

I have a Uniflow powder measure, but rarely used it except for ball powders for the pistol or H380 for the 22-250. I really like the Chargemaster combo instead of a beam balance scale.

You probably won't save any money reloading, but you can choose the bullet you want and most likely get a load more accurate than factory ammo. If you only shoot a few boxes a year, I'd stick with factory ammo.

Boy, have I got a deal for you. I have most of the items Doug listed in his reply, but the press is an RCBS Jr. with primer catcher and auto primer feeder circa 1968 in perfect shape. I also have the RCBS powder measure with stand, a Lyman/Ohaus M5 scale (not electronic), Forster case trimmer, gauges, deburring tool, loading blocks, all sorts of shell holders, extra primer decapping pins and assorted other goodies, including primers, bullets, etc. Have a couple sets of rifle dies, too, but not sure what calibers you need. Everything is in almost new shape and perfect setup to get started with.

We can negotiate a smoking deal for the works if you want. Where do you live? -TONY

I went down to the Dillon Precision in Scottsdale when I was looking into reloading and they were very helpful and had all I needed right there. I had no idea about reloading, when I left their store I felt pretty good about using the machine I purchased. If you have someone who knows what they are doing and already has a set up then you might want to test it out and have them give you some advice as well. As far as price goes I have no idea what the comparisons are, I had a friend that sent me to the Dillon store And to be honest I haven't had a problem yet. When it comes to reloading on this site Doug seems to me to be about the most informative so his advise should be checked out for sure.
