22N Nov 27th Bull Elk Hunt

Recommended Posts

So I don't get crucified right off I will say I have a plan in place already and know the unit well, so I'm not asking for any hunt locations. Just thought I would throw my thoughts out here and let the comments guide me a bit on my ideas. I'm thinking that is what this forum is for, to share, swap stories and ideas.

My plan is to hunt the base of the rim on opening day and maybe day two at known locations. From there I plan to move to the lower areas of the unit away from the rim and see what is being pushed around in the unit. I usually drive to a set location and park; from there I hike away from the roads to high ground and let the road hunters stir things up a bit while I spend the day glassing for a spot and stalk. Of course having a well traveled game trail or bedding/feeding area is a plus and I have a few picked out. But I'm sure from the time I have located these areas last month to now; things have changed a bit with the weather coming in.

Reason I'm asking for advice here is this is my first Nov Bull Elk hunt and I know this will be a tough hunt. In past years when I have been lucky enough to get drawn, distant water holes have always been productive during my archery hunt, not so much this time of the year though, I'm sure.

Any thoughts......

the 22n "thanksgiving" and "late bull" (22 is the only unit in the state with back to back rifle bull hunts in the late season) both depend on the whether. I had the thanksgiving hunt, and the following year, my buddy had the late, late bull.

So the reason that the late late hunt exists, is the weather will push a large amount from the rim into 22. On our thanksgiving hunt, the cold snap hadn't happened yet and there was a large population that hadn't dropped down yet. When I talked to guys out there, there were a few that said the bulls could be up against the rim wall waiting for it to get cold. It rained and sleeted on weds of that hunt. Thursday was miserable, Friday when we packed out everything was frozen. the weather came late, good news for the late late hunt.

last year, on the late late bull... it was low 60's and low 30's... until the Saturday after the hunt ended. I know it was Saturday because we made plans to drive back up with the fam to cut Christmas trees, and were met with snow from payson all the way up the rim

hope for cold weather, and start against the wall

Thanks for the comments.. "Enjoy the pack out" Lol. Yup should be fun as I'm hunting solo this hunt due to hunting partner not being able to make the hunt now.

Thanks a lot, Green Bullet! You let him in on my "secret spot"! I guess I will have to road hunt then. That is if I ever draw a tag that isn't canceled.

Good luck Win Mag. Im jealous. Love hunting Unit 22.
