Why do we name wild animals?

I saw a USF&W & G&F officer at my taxidermist yesterday talking about the "Macho" rug they were picking up, and they said they were heading over to get a "Jag" for the "Boss". I thought they were talking about a car, but maybe not?

Idk ask the guys that name the deer they hunt and kill every year.

Yeah, I don't get that either.......but eh....to each his own.

So we can discern different animals were are watching and pursuing over the course of months to years. Easier to remember "Buckethead" than "Mr. 32" wide 7x8 with the big inline extras and the 2 cheaters on the right, and the drop tine and 6" sticker on the left".

I guess Ive never been on so many giant bucks that I couldn't tell the difference between them. For me it's really easy to remeber the big 32" wide buck or the 28" wide one with the deep forks without naming them. The name makes for a good thread title though.

I actually wanted to make up a name for the buck I shot and post it since its a puny buck that id never seen before, just for the lolz.

My lingo is more like "that big buck that we saw over there tht one time" not " I saw Steve over by the big Boulder today"

But I'm not very creative either

I rarely if ever refer to a name of a buck or a bull outside of my close group of friends. We all hunt the same areas and try to get to know all the animals in that area, (unsuccessful I know) often times there are a few that are real wide or have extra kickers etc... it is easier for us to talk about which buck or bull was seen by using a name. I killed a decent bull last year, we dubbed the big thirds bull because guess what ??? he had big thirds, this year we found an area that had two bulls with giant thirds, we had to come up with separate names.

As an individual it is easy to know what animal you are seeing, but it is tough trying to convey that to your other good buddies. I don't like dumb names though myself, all of them have reference to characteristics.

I think you should give yourself some more credit than that. Your creativity is just better suited for different surroundings. Youd probably crush it as an adult film director or a strip joint manager.
