MT_Sourdough Report post Posted October 30, 2015 You all are speaking the God's honest truth. Long distance shooters led me to going back to a lever action and the timber. There are skilled long distance shooters who know what they are doing, but for every one of them, there are 4 yahoos who fancy themselves as natural born snipers. A far as driving in to a designated nonmotorized area. UGHH!!! Don't get me started. Let's just say i am not for it. I have had hunters on ATVs pick my pocket before, but they didn't do anything wrong. They just got lucky to ride up into deer that I pushed into a pocket. It stings, but I can't have any animosity for the lucky SOBs that came up at just the right time. Anyways. Your situation is much different and I'd be steaming. What would I have done? Typically, I sneak away without letting them see me and i go some where else.
Sneaker Report post Posted October 30, 2015 I can't stand bumping into other hunts, I head the opposite direction as fast as I can usually. In your situation, I would have been taking a picture of his vehicle's VIN number while he was gutting his animal and sending it to the local officer. Hunterjohnny Report post Posted October 30, 2015 I would have filmed as much as I could on my phone and got close pictures of them. Then called it in. It's like the long range "snipers". For every good one there are four bad and they need a wake up call.
PRDATR Report post Posted October 30, 2015 Everyone wants to be the only one in an area. My bucket list is pretty small and only lacks a lion and an antelope. I can count all the deer I have killed on one hand in 30 years. Passed on a lot more. Guess I should have been a vegetarian. LOL If I hike into an area and come up on another hunter I stop and talk. SOmetimes I leave because that's just me. I really like being the only one for as far as I can see. I spent the weekend in 16A and only saw a single group of four guys glassing from their UTV on the way in. Never saw another hunter the rest of the weekend but I hiked into a wilderness area that I only know of another hunter who goes into it. Apparently the deer must not be using it this time of year but I'm going back to see if I can find the lone brute I saw last winter which was the only deer I have seen in there in three years. Everyone has their own take on hunting. I like to be successful but won't do it at the expense of other hunters experience.

I have been tempted to just take the old iron sight lever action out .... would be kind of nice if maybe they had some late hunts in a few units that were open sights only ! heck that would be more primitive than new generation smoke poles guys are scoping up and shooting out to 150 yards +

Whitesheep Report post Posted October 31, 2015 These comments are why I don't read hunting magazines and don't watch hunting shows on TV. It has become too much about the range at which game is shot (longer = better) and the size of the antlers/skull. What happened to getting close to game to prove your "hunting" ability? While I haven't read any in a while, I recall most magazine hunting articles followed this formula: 1. Expert writer gets free hunt from high priced guide 2. Expert writer gets free high end optics and a loaner high dollar rifle 3. Expert writer gets free high end clothing 4. Expert writer hunts the entire time allotted to the hunt through wind/rain/snow/poor TV reception in wall tent set up by guide 5. On the last day expert writer kills the biggest thing to walk the planet of that species The only exception to this pattern I know of is the Western Hunter show where they actually sometimes don't bag anything. Rant over. Thanks for letting me vent.
