JLG Report post Posted October 28, 2015 I went out the first three days of this season and never glassed up a deer. We drove by a few does. It has been a long time since I have gone three days without glassing a deer. I was helping two father's and their young sons so in spite of a great weekend outdoors and the first real hiking and hill climbing I have done since a heart attack i had September 1st out dove hunting, I was disappointed I couldn't get the kids on deer. It looks like one father and his 14 year old are coming back this weekend for one more try. If the kid takes a deer it will be his first one. This is his fourth tag. Kid loves the stuff and is a very good shot. I have spent sometime in 4a this summer and have seen very few bucks. Any thoughts or advice on these units would be appreciated. PM'so welcome. Thanks JLG.
Guest akaspecials Report post Posted October 28, 2015 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there just aren't many deer in those units. I have spent most of spring, summer, and fall in 4a for as long as I can remember. The bucks are few and far between up there. Mostly mulies too so they don't pattern. It is a very flat unit too, so glassing is dang near impossible. I would get into the pine to juniper transition area and try to find the few areas to glass in there. There are also a lot of small canyons in that transition area that you can walk the top of and look down into that hold deer.
trphyhntr Report post Posted October 28, 2015 My dad killed a nice mature buck in the northern part of the unit by finding an area that had fresh tracks and just focused glassing there. It was the only place he found any tracks I think lol. He was by the power line. I was told by a reputable source that there is toads in there though or was anyway.
Flatlander Report post Posted October 28, 2015 The guys at Desert country archery in Holbrook live in the unit and hunt that country a lot. They might be able to help you out.
yotebuster Report post Posted October 28, 2015 If I had that tag I'd be glassing/hunting chevelon for a monster coues buck. I would wager there are more coues in that unit then muleys. Not saying there are a lot of coues but there sure as heck aren't many muleys!!
Northern Pintail Report post Posted October 28, 2015 I'd hunt more towards the forest boundary than towards the rim.

AVNAZ Report post Posted October 29, 2015 Spent last 3 days in 4a without coming across anything. Usually can glass something, used to 36a cous hunts. Agreed, this is a tough area. Heard that off 122 there was a fork taken. But thats all. Havent seen many hunters this week either. Was up near heart canyon, supose to be a good section, but they are doing controlled burning...i'm just guessing this might be driving them away. That plus the Full Moon for the past couple nights. Good luck if you get back up here. Also...heard that years ago they gave out 2400 tags...opposed to the 200 and some now...population has gone way down. Bhunter24 Report post Posted October 29, 2015 A friend of mine had that tag a couple years ago. He hunted 4b and more north. I believe there is a few places to glass in the lower country. Maybe give that a try? Good luck.
