Craigslist Scam ?

Recommended Posts

I had a few things to sell so I put up a few ads on Craigslist and about every person who text me about them was from somewhere 500, 800 1500 2000 miles away and they all said the same thing ....Consider it sold, I will need all your contact info , I will pay the price you want, I will send you a check with an extra $75, I will have a truck pick it up all in broken English bla, bla bla....Never once did any of them call me and when I would text them CASH ONLY I never heard from them again. Locals just call and say where are you I'll come look at it and bring cash. What is it, did people find an easy way to rip you off on GL ? I sell cash only and in person. Sold a nice 2002 F350 for $14,500 within 2 days once but there must be a big scam going on if your not careful.

This kind of scamming on CL has been going on for years now. It's scary knowing how many people still fall for these scams. Like you mentioned above ^^^ I mostly only always do deals with cash and in person. I've also done some deals with shipping/sending money with members who are too far to meet in person and all has been perfect.

Years ago, a couple yahoo's tried to pull that scam on me. Cash only, and I always check the watermarks on the bills. There have been CL buyers trying to pass fake money.

I was selling a snowmpobile in Michigan, and the scammers said that they were from Nigeria, and had to have my sled. Someone would pick it up, yadda yadda. I responded that they could drive it out of my yard, just head north!

I was told to not even accept a cahiers check because they can be copied so good that the bank will cash them but once it won't clear it is on you.....me.

check this, i had a rangefinder for sale for $250.00 the guys sends me a cashier check for $2500.00 and tells me to send him $2000.00 back via western union to certain address, i checked how long for a cashiers check to clear it couls be weeks.

be careful, was not craiglist, was archery talk and bowsite, read this,

Best Answer: Not so fast, folks! There has been a LOT of fraud lately with cashier's checks and money orders. If it's drawn on a major national bank with offices near where the recipient lives it should clear in a day or so. However many checks from obscure local banks can take weeks to clear in some cases. The fraudsters have become so good with their fake checks that it's possible to take as long as 20 days or more for a bogus cashier's check to bounce.

There is an ad campaign running on TV about fake checks and anyone who has seen the ads (or been burned by one) will be rather cautious about a check received from an unknown person.

I always present cashier's checks for collection at my credit union. That way the check isn't credited to my account until it has cleared at the paying bank and has been confirmed as paid. That adds a couple of days processing time but avoids the chargebacks and bad check fees if the check is bogus. Most clear (or reject) within 3 to 5 days but I've had a couple take nearly 20 days to confirm as paid. And one bad one didn't come back for 23 days.

It sounds like the seller is being prudent. Be patient. By the way, you can confirm clearance through your bank as well. Once it clears, contact the seller and verify that fact.
