sjvcon Report post Posted October 26, 2015 What a shame. Hope they find the person(s) responsible. Wonder if it was shot by accident ... you know ... someone shooting at one and hitting the one behind it, or something like that. Not that such occurrences are okay ... KNOW YOUR TARGET AND BEYOND and all ... but it would lack the intent of a true poacher.
Coach Report post Posted October 28, 2015 sjvcon, that's pretty much what I thought was the most likely scenario too. I absolutely love the youth hunts, but it seems so many want to drive roads with their youth hunters and take a lot of off-hand running shots from the road. I don't know what happened on this particular hunt that lead to the dead bull left to waste, but on my youngest son's first cow elk hunt we heard a lot of shots from the road and it was always multiple shots. Shooting at a running herd leads to wounded animals that sometimes the hunter didn't even know they hit. Good news is, on Josh's hunt we did a lot of stalking, getting in position and he put one shot perfectly on the lead cow in a group of bulls, cows and calves. I hope the mentors on here hunt like you do, and teach the ethics of when not to shoot.
sandman38y Report post Posted October 28, 2015 I think it was a general antlerless hunt going on at the time, not a youth hunt, probably elk fever, someone shot without first clarifying bull/cow. I would like to know how big the bull was, in my opinion it might show level or iresponsability, not that any level is a acceptable!
Matt Meyer Report post Posted October 28, 2015 I agree with sandman. Someone probably didn't see the antlers. Hope they get them
