Flatlander Report post Posted October 22, 2015 Recently I had an article published in Eastman's and as a thank you I was given a certificate for a pair of Kennetrek boots. The three models I am looking at are the desert guide, hardscrabble and mountain, all in insulated. I was curious to see if anyone else has any of the three and their thoughts on why they chose what they did.

SWDesertRat Report post Posted October 22, 2015 It looks like your saying you want uninsulated? Keep in mind the desert guides are not GorTex (WindTex for kenetrek) lined, so water proofing will come only from whatever leather treatment you put on the boots. Also, Kenetrek has some models that can't be resoled. I have Nothing specific to help you out but maybe some additional things to think about.
yotebuster Report post Posted October 22, 2015 I've had all three. I like my mtn extremes but I've had 3 ankle surgeries so I'm always worried about rolling them. The soles on the hardscrabble a and the mtn extenes are really soft. They will wear out in 1 maybe 2 years In the desert which is why they made the desert guide. I love the soft sole in the other two though and just haCE mine resoled every year or two. Costs $80 if I rmemebr right. I'm not willing to compromise grip for longer lasting soles personnally. So just decide if you want high or low tops and if you are ok resoling or not.
Antmo23 Report post Posted October 22, 2015 I have the Mt Extremes and absolutely love them. I did wear my soles down in less than 3 years, but you know where I've been going, that terrain eats up boots. $85 To get then re soled. Took a long time to break em in, but they are, by far, the most comfortable pair of boots/shoes I've ever had.
yotebuster Report post Posted October 22, 2015 One thing to add. If you go with the hardscrabble over the desert guide you will be getting water proof membrane. This is good and bad. It will cut down your breathability some, (not much however, as the windtex they use is way better then goretex imo). If you get the desert guide and silicon them then you will have no breathability, you could just as well wear a rubber boot in that case. So also decide if waterproof is a must have. If you're hunting in snow then I feel it is. If it's dtrictly desert (low desert) then the desert guides will breathe better.
WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted October 22, 2015 I have two pair of hardscrabble, to me they work well. I like having a waterproof membrane. Just be prepared to repair the sole after a couple of years, but it isn't really that expensive if the boot fits you well.
