SunDevil Report post Posted July 12, 2007 OK - you guys are KILLIN ME. let me say again for the record, I DO NOT feel slighted. I am NOT cryin'. I am NOT bellyachin'. I am NOT irritated. I DO NOT have sour grapes. In fact I congratulate the winners and hope they all harvest booners. also, I completely understand and appreciate the good use the money is put towards. yes it is like the lottery. a non resident could buy a ticket and win but the money from all the other non residents stays right here in AZ. yes I was a little surprised to see 6 of the 11 winners were non residents. this made me wonder a couple of things. 1) is the primary purpose of the raffle to generate money? if so that is fine and they are doing a great job. if not, what is the primary purpose and should something be changed. 2) what peoples thoughts were about the Super Raffle vs the UT Sportsman's Permit raffle which is only available to UT residents. 3) what were other peoples thoughts about 6 of the 11 winners being non residents. that is all. thank you and good night lucy. Muley62 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 #1. The only purpose is to raise the maximum amount of money. The species specific organizations (i.e. the ADA. AES, ADBSS. etc...) administer the money #2 The Utah raffle is open to non residents as well as residents. I think Utah has gone way too far with the special tag concept. #3 A better question would be "how do I feel about 11 out 11 winners not being Chris Denham"? Well, I am ticked off! I will guess that a little more than 60% of he tickets came from non residents and since this is all about raising money then I don't care in the least. DesertBull Report post Posted July 13, 2007 #2 The Utah raffle is open to non residents as well as residents. I think Utah has gone way too far with the special tag concept. I believe he is talking about the Utah "Sportmans tag", which is ANOTHER set of fund raising tags only for residents of UT, not the Super Raffle which are available to anyone but you have to be at their banquet to buy. Seems Utah sells more tags outside the draw than they do in it. I believe this is all Utah SFW stuff too. Which is why everyone was nervous when the AZ SFW was formed. Noel Arnold Report post Posted July 13, 2007 Like I said last year when we had this conversation, the raffle tag's are the lessor evil of the auction tags.I would rather they increase the tag fees to get the extra money. The reason is if I had put in as a resident for a hunt for 15 years and finally got drawn and I had scouted a world class animal,it would be tough to see a auction or raffle tag shoot that animal before any regular season has started.I am sure that this has happend to some hunters in the past. Muley62 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 I don't think that Utah has any tags that are raffled and only available to Utah residents. You do have to go to their convention in order to be qualified for the drawing though. These are Utah tags and they are trying to bring people to Utah with the requirement so i don't have a big problem with it.
missedagain Report post Posted July 13, 2007 A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!!! I think it would be stupid to try and limit NR in a drawing like this when the name of the game is making the g$f money(what a suprise) I refused to purchase a ticket for this raffle because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised last year with the raffle and I never heard of one good thing happening for wildlife with that money. If anyone has any specific examples of what the game and fish did with that money I would love to be informed. p.s. Real men go to NAU!
Muley62 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 The funds for special tags are administered by G&F with oversight from the conservation organizations. For example the link below will show you alot of the work that the AES has done. Many of these projects use both tag fund money and private money and I can't tell you which is which but it does give you and idea. By state law the funds must be spent on approved habitat work. Each of the groups can always use help on their habitat committees which decide and work on these projects so you can have direct input if you care to join. http://www.arizonaelksociety.org/fundedprojects.html
elmergoo Report post Posted July 14, 2007 From the looks to me ,is all that money going to elk ?
missedagain Report post Posted July 14, 2007 I know that org.s like AES and ADA do a lot of great projects, but the way I read that is that none of these orgs get any of that money. It says that they are suppose to have some oversight (input) on how it is spent but it actually gets spent by the g$f. And if this is the same g$f that I know they like to accept public input and then do what ever the heck they want.
Muley62 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 All of those were elk projects because those were the ones done by AES. Missed, I hear your problem and don't completely disagree. Doing this work with G&F is the most effecient possible way. Many of the projects require NEPA and EIS research done before the project can begin and the department personel are equiped to do this. These projects would take decades to finish if we had to do that work!
NRS Report post Posted July 15, 2007 As a former board member of adbss, and an agency employee that works with G&F to construct projects, I can assure you that there is very little overhead taken out of the funds raised by the various raffles. G&F presents a list of projects that are reviewed by a commitee and then approved by the board of directors for the organization, so there are several checks and balances by the sportsmen to guarantee that the maximum amount of money goes to habitat and wildlife on the ground. we also need to remember that all of those $$'s from the non-residents benefit OUR wildlife, and they only get the satisfaction of helping out in hopes that one day they too may get the opportunity to hunt here.
