Bushnell Tanks - Muley

Recommended Posts

I'll be doing some last minute scouting in 22 for the Muley Hunt-

I've never been to Bushnell Tanks, I heard FR 22 is still closed. Is there another way in?

Of course, I could always walk it

Everytime I drive past it there are a bunch a vehicles parked there. In almost 40 years I have never has the urge to go there. It always seemed to have way too many people.

I have heard two different versions of the story. (might be the same story)

the combined version is, after a fire in the area, a kid on a quad was out riding and wound up dying. The family attempted to sue the state/forest service/game and fish/??? So in a way to avoid settlement.... they locked the gate, called it "a regrowth area", and have no plans to open it.

I have token the mountain bike back in there. Others on here have told me about deer behind the gate. but there's no access to it. so you have to hike it in or out.

I know there's a road that come s out on the other end by punkin center (we did the jeep trail from bushnell tanks over the ridge a few times).... but the last time I had a deer tag in there, we attempted going up the back side of ord to gain access, and instead of a gate, the state placed giant boulders over the road to end access that way

Ahhh I was considering coming in from Punkin- I didn't know about the boulders.

So it'll be feet or bike.. I'd be ok with both. I have a desire this time to hunt a bit away from the highway- I've seen so many hunters this year walking over each other and causing mass traffic that I'm willing to go pretty deep in to avoid that. I've got a 3-4 day pack I picked up that seems perfect for a multi-day hike.

Found some nice areas around Horseshoe too- I'm spending this weekend out on a few hills to see what walks around.

But thanks for the input!

Most people won't walk far. If you walk in on the road more than a mile you leave 90% of others behind. Plus once you get in a ways and start climbing above the road there is good glassing and most won't make the climb needed to get to the best spots.

The death story involves a van of scouts that tried to cross the river when it was flooding.

I miss when it was open. Had a lot of fun up there. But I understand why its closed down. Last few times we had to call the sheriff to come in and deal with the a holes that were tearing the place up. Last time a guy was shooting in our direction. He almost met the business end of my USP. claimed he had the right because he had been going up there for years. Sheriff also didn't see it his way.

I found a circuit I may be taking from from the 87 through Bushnell, kiss the sloped of Edwards Park and do a return trip. I should see some good stuff.

I'm getting all psyched up for next week!!

As I read this im glassing from a hill that I just got too after walking 2 miles over 2 mountains only to find 3 different groups of dudes back here. I'm going to back to road hunting
