Couesdeer

Daughter's first deer.

Recommended Posts

After not drawing a Jr deer hunt last year, but enjoying success on a leftover Javelina tag, we were excited to have drawn a 12A west Jr tag this year.

The hunt didn't start as well as we would have liked. On the way out of town, my pickup was giving us trouble. Rather than take a chance, we limped back to grandpa's house and loaded everything into his van and then dropped my pickup off at the shop. We didn't leave Tucson until shortly after noon. 9 hours later we found our spot outside Jacob lake and set up a quick camp in the dark.

Opening day, we saw several deer, however we couldn't get a shot off as by the time she was set up for the shot, the deer became savvy and bugged out.

We didn't see as many deer on Saturday, but we did manage to find one that hesitated long enough for Grace to take and make the shot.

She is now 2 for 2 on her big game tags. I told her not to get used to it as I come home empty handed more often than not. Nonetheless, she is already talking about a next year being her year to draw an elk tag!

My very first hunting memories also involve a van. She'll never forget it.
