Cold weather jacket recommendations

Recommended Posts

I need a jacket for those rim hunts in the winter! Probably goose down, unless there is something better these days?

Goose down jackets are great. Problem is - usually the material rips real easy when used for something rough like hunting, or if it gets wet you are in trouble there. Better for packing bc it is lightweight but can't handle making your way through thick brush.

Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser is nice. It will cost a penny. It may itch, mine doesn't itch bad. The Jac shirt is also kind of nice as a "jacket" but its not heavy. Keeps you warm when wet. For when it's icy and wind chill factor is high just throw on a scarf. Wool Packer Coat if it gets really freezing, but that's probably overkill.

I personally like to layer when in cold weather. That way when it warms up for the day, I'm not stuck carrying a jacket and moving down to something lighter. I've got some wool base layers in differing weights, a puff jacket that can stuff like crazy and then a shell that I put over everything (or nothing). I can mix and match depending on the weather.

I have a Patagonia DAS parka. Works great in the snow. Never used it in shoulder seasons with rain though. I refuse to buy down because any rain or moisture leaves you F****D with down.

Take everything you own that is cotton and throw it out.... You'll thank me one day.

Recommend layering with a durable outerlayer and then down/synthetic underneath.

You can find great deals on North Face, etc online for 50-75% off. The colors are strange but if you are wearing it as a layer who cares.

North Face ThermoBall for $76 online--- probably the most packable as well.

Last November, I shot my archery bull at 0 degrees. I had a long sleeve shirt, underarmour hoodie and a KUIU guide jacket and a vest. We were hiking quite a bit but it worked for me. I upgraded to the down jacket this year, we will see how it does. I also would recommend layering unless you are sitting still for great lengths and are close to a vehicle.
