Snakes?

Recommended Posts

I've stepped on one and walked up on several others. Luckily for me the one I stepped on just wanted out from under my boot more that striking me. That was a hectic several minutes there but it's never kept me from going out to hunt. I just stay aware and go about my business. I'm not one to kill them either, I just figure if I get bit I'm the one that invaded their space in the first place.

Just another thing that can take me out while out n about in the world.

you buncha sissies. i'm supposed to wear em. to protect the snakes. they're always bustin' off their fangs and when they do get one to poke me, they die. looks like a miserable death too. rollin' around makin' little snake cryin' sounds. stinkin' snakes. Lark.

I do not venture out without my snake boots , Rockys. I have been rattled and see my fair share of rattlers in 36B.

Many years ago , I bought snake pants, from I think , Gander , opening morning of the season , I put them on , walked 50 yards and went back and took them off. I must have looked like 'Igor' walking, all stiff legged. Thankfully, they took them back.

I do not like snakes ( major understatement). I also have been looking at the gaitors instead of the boots , just wish I could find them locally so I could put them on and see how they feel.

Two incidents that were serious encounters in my mind......

My 12 year old stumbles on some rocks, catches himself with his face about 6" from a small black rattler that was buzzing......really hard to concentrate on hunting after that.

Then one year we were antler hunting in March......working my way up a steep slope, I reach up to grab a bush to pull myself up with and there about 12" from my face was a small rattler curled up, we had not alarmed him yet and we just all the sudden went wide and antlers all the sudden became 2nd priority.

No gators would have saved anybody in either one of those situations........

One thing I have noticed out of all the 10000s of miles walked etc with people responding to this post and not one has said they have been bitten. Lots of close encounters like when I almost got nailed quail hunting in mid December, I haven't been right since.

Remember 'The Rifleman' episode where a rattler crawls into Lucas McCain's bedroll and spoons with him?

If so, you bought a hammock.

Came across this little 3 1/2 foot fatty while quail hunting on opening weekend. Did his job and buzzed loudly prior to me seeing him...... Scared the crap out of me!!

I have been bitten and that's why I HATE rattlesnakes!!! It was a dry bite but still got to spend 5 days in the hospital. I wear gators and carry my snakebite kit on every hunt, even December elk (when I get drawn).Too many close encounters to not have in the back of your head all the time.

Anti venom is pretty pricey

The new anti venom used by hospitals is called Crofab and is 60k per dose, an average sized male human will require 2 doses. Right now, I dont think it is covered by any insurance. So you will be out of pocket

Here is my favorite snake pic I've taken. He came over a dead branch 1.5 yards away from me when I was sitting in the ground during a coyote stand. His 5 foot skin looks nice on the wall
