CouesSlayer Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Interesting thing happened the other day.... I was out shooting my XT the other day and it went nuts on me. I have been shooting since the NM draw (couple weeks) and it was shooting just like it was in January when I got my deer. Then I went out one morning at forty yards and it shot off the target a foot to the left and high, I thought it was just me since I'm DEFINITELY not the best shot but it did it four more times. I checked all my sights and the knock level and the peep and it hadn't moved at all! I adjusted it and it has shot well since then. Since I'm pretty darn new to archery I'm wondering if this has happened to anybody, and will it continue to do it? I'm just worried I'll have that big bull at forty yards and my bow will whack out on me! (Pretty good excuse though HAHAHA!) Please post your comments on this wierd happening Did you leave it your vehicle for an extended amount of time, during the heat of the day? The extreme heat could have screwed up your string/cable. DesertBull Report post Posted July 2, 2007 You should probably take it in and have them make sure it has not stretched. A stretched string/cable will effect your tuning, draw length and anchor point. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
mattys281 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 String or cable stretch shows up most noticably in your nock point no longer being square. It would account for vertical sight deviations, but not horizontal. When bows sit for long periods & things stretch out, sometimes the two sides of the buss cable stretch unevenly & you get cam lean. If your cam is leaning you should be able to see it by holding the bow in front of you & staring right down the string w/ the cam away from you. You'll see it hook one way or the other. You would also be able to see your arrows fish-tailing. If this is the case, you'll need to twist up which ever side has stretched more until you get it square. Note that the Zebra strings mathews equips their bows with are notorious for stretching. I, personally, go with a set of winners choice strings & cables on everything I shoot (have a set arriving this week for my Diablo). There's also a guy on AT.com called bucknasty who makes strings & cables. His are supposed to be excellent quality & a lot of guys on there prefer them to the Winner's Choice. Sometimes my bow goes wacky & it's not the bow at all, it's me being tired or impatient, or p.o.'ed about something & rushing my shooting which can manifest in several things you don't usually do, such as torquing, anchoring differently which shifts you sight pin further to one side of you peep instead of being centered, or just punching the trigger & generally speaking flinging arrows rather than shooting them. Often if you put the bow down & then pick it up again tomorrow you'll be right on. Can't tell you how many times I've adjusted my sights just to move them back again the next day. Good luck. Please post your comments on this wierd happening I have always been told to change strings every year just to be on the safe side. Also you know you have a good back up string that is already stretched to keep handy incase something happens in the field. Instead of just plane "wearing it out". I am not up to date on the newer mathews such as the XT, but the mathews I have had all had timing marks on them. They are two small holes on top and bottom of the bottom cam. They should be in line parallel to the string. If it is closer to the string on the top of the cam it is possiblly streched. If in deed you feel your bow needs re-strung I reccommend you replace them with shooters edge strings. They are outta Tucson and IMO are the best strings for the money by far! The shop name is SHOOTERS EDGE. I just got mine done for $64.95 OTD, strings and cables w/custom colors As mentioned before check your posture, grip, anchor ETC. It may feel comfortable now but may be a little different than back in January. Mathews grips are easy to grip incorrectly and still feel right. GOOD LUCK on your elk hunt. bowhunter4life Report post Posted July 3, 2007 when you left it in the garage. thinking it is not cooled but hot, your string,cable may have streched. I would keep a close eye on it, if the string starts to fray. I would change it, nothing worse then having a bow explode while shooting. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
coueshunter84 Report post Posted July 3, 2007 There are several hundred things that can cause what happened to you. The one thing I usually find when the same thing happens to me is a change in the grip. It only takes a little torque to throw arrows that far off. Especially if your brace height is less then 7". About once or twice a year I will go out and shoot a group thats several inches off the mark. And its usually my grip that ends up being the factor. Other then that, a soft case can allow things to catch on the rest or the sight. Both of which are main contributers to delemas like yours. ALso follow the strings and cables all the way around the bow, Make sure your have no burrs on the cams, and there is nothing stuck in the cams under the strings. And just to make sure your newly moved sight is still plumb, try shooting a broad head through the set up, and see if it still shoots straight. Nothing like blades to see if its planeing or not. As for strings, I change mine out every year. And now is the time. Especially if you still have the factory strings on the bow. Strings from the factory are made to be stretchy so if they are dry fired before they are purchased they dont blow up as easy. ( another reason I will not purchase a bow anywhere except a shop.) That being said, during the "down time" which is right now. The shops will not be as busy as they are right before the seasons. Which is when everyone remembers they need to get new ones, and the shops fill up with bows. I would get it done now, and not have to worry about it later. And right now you will definately have it all broke in by the seasons. And as stated above the fellow at Shooters Edge it Tucson makes some of the best custom strings and cables around. I will probably be taking my bow to get strings soon, as it sounds important! Tuscon is mighty far for me to go though, so I'll call my local shop and see what the deal is. Oh and I have been practicing with broadheads, that seems to be the only way to go as when I switched from field tips to broadheads last years I had to make quite a few adjustments Keep the info coming! I am telling you it IS worth it! I drove 4 hours to have my bow blessed with a SHOOTERS EDGE string. Or search the internet and order one, he has an ONLINE STORE, keywords: shooters edge. Then have your local shop install it. As mentioned before it is about time for the shops to get busy. Ray was already feeling the surge a couple weeks ago, once again GOOD LUCK!
