i'm chartering a custom build for a 7mm rem mag. should be ready in 2-3 months. my goals with the rifle is to become my all around hunting rig, but i also want to become proficient out to 1000 yards.

 

with that said, it's clear i'm going to have to reload to get that level of performance. can you guys give me a list of some must have items to get my reloading setup going? sounds like a few guys recommend the rcbs press. i see they sell a "kit" for 350 or so...i'm hesitant to buy the kit if certain parts of it suck (scale, powder measurer, etc etc).

 

so if you guys can share your best known methods with respect to what works the best, is repeatable, quality, etc i'd appreciate it.

Depending how much you are wanting to spend, and how often you plan to reload, My RCBS chargemaster has been my best purchase. Speeds up reloading considerably.

 

RCBS Rock chucker press is perfect.

thanks. did you get the 300+ dollar one or the one for 190....i checked midway usa and i can't tell the difference btw the two except the price....

The difference is, the 350$ one comes with a scale, and the cheaper one I believe is the dispenser only. When I bought mine, Natchez had the best deal. I saw cabelas had them for $299 not too long ago.

The RCBS Rock Cucker Supreme kit is probably going to be your best bet to get started. If you are patient and watch the sales you can usually pick it up for around $250. They do sales on the kit all the time, probably because they know once they get you hooked, you will eventually spend A LOT more. Once you jump into the reloading rabbit hole, you will likely be into it for well over $1000 by the time you get your setup the way you want it. First things I would recommend you pick up that aren't in the kit are

- a small digital scale, Franklin Arsenal makes a good one that is pretty cheap.

- a digital caliper, you can get a good one anywhere for under $20.

I run an electronic power throw with a scale, but the .1 grain accuracy is not good enough for my finished loads. Great for throwing them fast and getting close, but every load (with the exception of high volume .223 for varmints), gets transferred over to my RCBS 5-0-5 beam scale and individually trickled and weighed. I can see a difference of a single kernel of extruded powder, and sometimes even cut a kernel in half to get it perfect.
