Pine Donkey Report post Posted September 22, 2015 This year I lucked into a Unit 1 bull tag just two years after my last one. This time around I decided that any mature bull will do; no holding out for a wall hanger. I hunted the first weekend then returned to work for the week with hopes that the rut would be better the second week. Saturday morning was very quiet, and I was thinking I made a big mistake. Sunday was also very quiet, but things turned on Monday morning. We had several 'almost' situations and passed a few littler ones. Midday, the storm moved in and out came the rain gear, but the hunt continued. Things came together Monday evening. I was able to sneak in on a small herd with a 6 point. When he stepped out at 45 yards, the striker landed right behind the shoulder and he only when 10 yards before rolling. The night was long, but I had a lot of help. Mark and Garrett were with me, then Jaime, Rich and my parents all came out to help pack out. We were able to get it done in one trip. It amazes me that my parents and Rich, all in their 70's, are still able to pack elk, in the rain, in the dark, through very rocky terrain. I can only hope to be in that condition when I am their age. Thanks to all that helped me with this elk. Without the help of friends and family, elk hunting would not be very enjoyable. The picture is a bit dark. I have a bad habit of shooting elk in the last minutes of light.
