Non Typical rifle build?

You hear about lots of Remingtons and Savages, and builds from old Mauser actions. Does anyone build rifles off actions such as Browning, Weatherby, Ruger or others?

My daughter, shoots a 264 win mag, that is built on a browning a-bolt action. Craig's Custom Rifles, here in Tucson, is rebuilding it for a second time for us.

 

Some of the problems that I have found is the lack of components that are made for the other actions. Stocks, etc

I have multiples on pre 64 model 70 actions. Don't really need any "components" with them. Already have a trigger that can't be improved on, screw on a new barrel and bed the action. Kinda hard to find the magum actions with the cut out top straps. Anything standard length or shorter works very well. And they are incredibly strong and accurate. Lark.

I'm very curious too! I was thinking of getting a tikka because I love the action on it. Order a 26" barrel and rechamber it to a 6.5 creedmoor. One I never custom made any gun ever and don't know the exact procedures what to do, second I haven't seen or read anything about somebody doing something like that with the Tikka.

I have 2 rifles that i have built in the last few years on weatherby vanguard actions and am very pleased! Was a pain at first to find a gunsmith that knew how to do them. I even stuck with the weatherby chamberings

A competent gunsmith can do anything you want on any action you want. It's just a matter of $. They all have their preferences. Finding that competent guy that will do what you want to do is the trick. Most smiths like 700's because they are easier to chuck up in a lathe. Not because they are superior. Just about action can be made accurate on a bench. How they perform in the field and personal preference is where they differ. Lark

I'm very curious too! I was thinking of getting a tikka because I love the action on it. Order a 26" barrel and rechamber it to a 6.5 creedmoor. One I never custom made any gun ever and don't know the exact procedures what to do, second I haven't seen or read anything about somebody doing something like that with the Tikka.

Tikkas are excellent donor actions, I would put them over a 700 or savage. Aftermarket components are the only down side.

Farkiller, my .300, will shoot one hole at 100, 1/2" at 200 and right at an inch at 300. i killed an elk at 910 yards with it a few years ago. factory wood stock, a little trigger work, a schnieder barrel and leupold varixIII 6.5x20 with a turret. a model 70 is as accurate as any and the action function is superior to all as far as i'm concerned. the 700's have a nice round action that is easy to chuck up, but that's about where the good part of em ends. you have to change the trigger, most competent smiths will add a claw extractor, etc. and you still don't have controlled round feed or a hammer safety when you're done. it all depends on what a guy wants. i usually hunt way different than most folks anhymore, and a model 70 works best for me. i own remingtons and rugers. 77's, 700's, 788's, 600's. all work ok but they also have little deficiencies i don't like. same as the savages and tikkas, rugers, etc. ruger advertises a model 70 "style" safety. one of the biggest lies ever told. they moved it to where it is in the same area as a model 70, but it is still just a trigger safety. it isn't on the bolt and doesn't block the hammer like a 70. still a decent rifle. but has no advantage over one with a tang safety. my son has a savage .338 lapua that shoots amazingly well. other son has a christensen 300 rum with a 700 action. great rifle. i killed a buck and a bull with it a couple years ago. deer was almost 700 yds and the bull was over 800. model 70's are real expensive compared to others. montana and kimber make action that are very similar to a 70, and they are real expensive. i'd really like to have a montana. just depends on what a guy wants and how he hunts. i never met a gun i didn't like. except 7mm08's. Lark.

Great info guys. I was just asking cause I came across an abolt Browning in 30-06. Thought it might be cool to build something from.

I am going to build my weatherby vanguard action some after I shoot the barrel out of it that it has now. I got lucky and with practice and handloads I have been able to shot .5" groups at 100 with a factory gun except for the timney trigger. More luck than anything I am sure but I am not going to mess with success.

 

I had always planned to build a 6.5-06 on a Howa action many years ago, but now that I have this I will prob stay with 257 weatherby or maybe a 6.5 weatherby mag.

 

I like things that are a little different though caliber wise. The generic calibers are boring to me. I shot 257 weatherby, 38 super, 45lc, 16 gauge, etc. So building a rifle on a 700 action isn't my style.
