Hunting quail with dogs

Recommended Posts

Last year I had the opportunity to hunt quail over a well trained dog and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

While out deer hunting in 20b last week I came across a big population of birds. I flushed hundreds of quail.

If you have a good dog and don't mind sharing, I'll show you where they are.

This spot is 20 minutes from Wickenburg.

Not much cactus there, either.

Thanks, looking forward to watching the dog work.

Don't shot the dog? OK but what if he jumped thru a fire.like a crazzy Lobo then foams with the fever after a week locked in the corn crib?

Too bad you quantified with "a good dog"!

Yeah, went with a fellow who's dog was way too young. It was all over the country side busting coveys 1/4 mile away, wouldnt hold the birds. Walked 10 miles that day and didn't even get a shot.

To be fair to the young dog coveys of gambles and scalies aren't designed to hold, if they did they'd be bobwhites or mearns. My dog has learned the difference flush the scalies and gambles hunt the singles, hold for mearns.

Didn't say the dog was supposed to hold coveys. Bust them though when we are all in the same county though, that would be helpful. Lol

The dog was out of control.

Lol that's the fun of it, my first year with my pointer was a lesson in patience that's for sure.

he certainly had drive, just needs to hone that energy and focus. Even the cactus couldn't slow him down.

That young dog you hunted with I would love to happen in Montana on those wide open prairies, great place for a dog like that. My dog will range a half mile at times on mearns up some rocky terrain and she's still on point when I lug my butt up to her huffing and puffing
