Barnesboy Report post Posted September 16, 2015 Is there a website that would offer barrels, muzzle brake, etc. that you guys recommend?
duckhunter175 Report post Posted September 16, 2015 Barnes-- -Depends on which 6.5 you decide to go with and what you do with that 30/06. I have a 6.5x284 and I bought two boxes of Nosler ammo to break in the barrel and get good brass and then I found 6.5x284 lapua brass on the shelf and picked up those as well. Take a look at Pac-Nor barrels. Great customer service, called them up and talked through exactly what I was looking for with my .338wm and we worked barrel contour, rate of twist, brake (I wanted a bench brake, no porting on bottom) etc. They have a simple website of each barrel they can make, the measurements of the different contours and the rates of twist available for each bore diameter. If you have a smith who will do your work locally then I would look at Stocky's Stocks-- they run package deals for stocks and barrels. Last stop would be long range hunting dot com. They have a great classifieds section with lots of established sellers offering up quality barrels. As for scopes-- I got a steal on the front focal plane Vortex HSLR (4-16x50 XLR) and snatched it up. Couldn't be happier. I own several Vortex optics, red dot, binos, rifle scopes and a spotter. No issues and they've even exchanged products for me when I bought a new item from a retailer and it was not what I actually needed. Buy the best you can with your budget! STOMP442 Report post Posted September 16, 2015 For what it's worth, my next rifle will likely be a 6.5 of some flavor. Although, my LRM pushing a 180 Scenar at 3000 with sun moa accuracy past 600 (furthest I've tested it) is going to be hard to move from. The nice thing about 6.5's is you don't have to push those big heavy bullets. Just about any 6.5 is capable of sub MOA accuracy at 600 yards and kills just as well. I don't think I said I HAD to push a big heavy bullet for sun moa accuracy at 600? No, you don't have too to get sub MOA accuracy but you do HAVE to run 168gr or heavier to show any improvement ballistically over the 6.5 140's
STOMP442 Report post Posted September 16, 2015 MidwayUSA has Shilen barrel blanks in stock in many lengths, contours and grades. $175-$375 depending on what you want to spend. I picked up a 26" chrome moly match #5 contour for $175 and built a .260 out of it. Barrel shoots amazingly well and I don't wish I spent the extra $200 at all. lancetkenyon Report post Posted September 18, 2015 With a LA, I too, would go 6.5-06 AI if you are building a strictly hunting rifle for deer and elk. Think Creedmoor on Incredible Hulk gamma rays. If you plan to shoot it a lot, look at the .260 AI and help extend barrel life. You could do a 6.5 SLR too (of course I had to throw that in). If you want the meanest deer/antelope round alive, look at a .25-06 AI. I love mine, and deer HATE it. My other choice would be .280 AI, which is probably my next build. The 168-180 HVLDs would wreck an elk or deer at long range.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted September 18, 2015 Don't waste you money on a Vortex. 6.5 brass is easily made by running .270 brass through your 6.5-06 die. What scopes are you guys using and recommend? NOT a Huskemaw or the Vortex HSLR. But to give you an educated answer, what is your budget? I could suggest numerous scopes in the $1K+ to $5K range. willhunt4coues Report post Posted September 18, 2015 I use a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 ffp lrmoa scope. The FFP scope will be around 800.00 to 950.00 depending on where you buy and the sfp 6-24x50 lrmoa scope will run you about 750.00 to 850.00. My ffp has 95 moa of elevation and my dads sfp scope has 109 moa. The ffp suppose to have 80 moa and sfp 100 moa so to get more is even better. They are very light weight 24 oz and very clear. Put it this way I have owned Valdada, nightforce, vortex, ect and the Sightron SIII has just what the others offer at a lower price, weight, and I personally have tested all side by side for proper tracking. The sightron won. So I sold everything I had and bought all sightron scopes.

Well am saving the money now to start this build and one thing i plan on spending the most money on is the scope. But i talked to a guy on a different form and he suggest if my scope is still good i could have custom turrets made. My budget would be 1500-2000 for scope. Barnesboy Report post Posted September 21, 2015 Another question is stocks. Is it better to have a heavier stock or a lighter one for long ranger shooting
Titanium700 Report post Posted September 21, 2015 Run a 6.5/06 AI and then use a Leupold Mark 4 3.5x10, they have M1 turrets and is in your scope budget price. Oh yeah, make sure your barrel is an 8 twist.

It is a leupold
STOMP442 Report post Posted September 21, 2015 Leupold will work great and if it doesn't have turrets you can now order replacement screw on turrets for the old turn screw scopes, similar to what Stoney point used to sell, but in MOA clicks and directly from Leupold now.
