AverageJoe Report post Posted August 30, 2015 if you are talking about reloading yes both 5.56 nato and .223 use .224 bullets. If you are talking about factory ammo it is not safe to shoot 5.56 nato out of .223 rem
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted August 30, 2015 5.56 case stick it my chamber, gotta beat em out with a cleaning rod. My mini is just a safe keeper now.
.270 Report post Posted August 30, 2015 I've loaded both for over 40 years. Same set of dies. Just finished loading 2000 for both. Same dies. The .223 rem and .556 nato cartridge are exactly the same. And any .223 will shoot fine out of anything marked .556. Military .556 May have a long bullet that will be in the lands in a .223 and cause higher pressure, but there has never been anything definitive agreed on. The .223 and .556 shoot cartridges with the exact same dimensions. Chambers may vary for longer bullets and to cycle full and semi auto. Lark.
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted August 30, 2015 Chamber lengths and pressure issues are the reason they stick in my mini. Reloaded NATO brass or 223 brass shoots fine. Wolf, lake city, radway green, the cheap jungle crap I got, all stick.
AverageJoe Report post Posted August 31, 2015 Thats because you shouldnt shoot 5.56 nato out of a .223 rem chamber.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 31, 2015 Only difference between a .556 and a .223 is barrel twist. Cartridge is exactly the same specs. .556 nato has a faster twist to stabilize longer bullets. Any .223 bullet of any weight will shoot fine out of a .556. .556 weight bullets may not stabilize well out of a .223. Still shoots, just don't group well. Lark. Lark, I'm very surprised to say, you are incorrect on this.

.270 Report post Posted August 31, 2015 show me a difference. first one is the official case dimensions for the .556. second is the .223. the last comments are what the international folks say about it. again, the cartidges are exactly the same. difference is rifle twist, throat and leade. some manufacturers have different barrel face designs for better full auto and semi auto cycling. again, the cases are "exactly" the same. if you have a .556 lock up your .223 it's because the bullet is too long and it's in the lands causing too much pressure. and again, as in my first comment, any .223 load will work in a barrel marked .556. Lark. According to the official Commission Internationale Permanente pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives (C.I.P.) guidelines the .223 Remington case can handle up to 430 MPa (62,366 psi) piezo pressure.[6] In C.I.P. regulated countries every rifle cartridge combo has to be proofed at 125% of this maximum C.I.P. pressure to certify for sale to consumers. This is equal to the NATO maximum service pressure guideline for the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge. The SAAMI pressure limit for the .223 Remington is set at 379.212 MPa (55,000 psi), piezo pressure.[7] The dimensional specifications of 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington commercial brass cases are identical. The cases tend to have similar case capacity when measured, with variations chiefly due to brand, not 5.56 vs .223 designation. The result of this is that there is no such thing as "5.56 brass" or ".223 brass", the differences in the cartridges lie in pressure ratings and in chamber leade length, not in the shape or thickness of the brass.[11][12]
AverageJoe Report post Posted August 31, 2015 Show me a diagram of the two chamber specs and i will show you the difference.
.270 Report post Posted September 1, 2015 So you wanna change the argument? You go find chamber specs if you want. The cartridges are exactly the same and that's all there is to it. You can argue with yourself if you want. This one is over and you are wrong. Period. Lark.
AverageJoe Report post Posted September 1, 2015 No I am not wrong lol. I am not trying to argue as it is a simple fact. His barrel is stamped .223 rem...That means if someone buys it they should not shoot 5.56 nato out of it as the chamber of the rifle for sale is a .223 rem chamber. How did you ever work in a power plant if you are willing to overlook simple details?

Moderator please remove this post and I will post elsewhere. all this attention on your post should be a good thing and help you sell it. My personal opinion on mini 14's is they are junk and don't ever shoot straight no matter what kinda ammo you feed it.
