Havasuhunter Report post Posted August 25, 2015 I was just in 10 the other day. The elk have some sort of Antler fungus from all the rain. Talked to a biologist and he said that most Bulls will be completely broken up by the opener.😇😛😛
OpticNerd Report post Posted August 25, 2015 I was just in 10 the other day. The elk have some sort of Antler fungus from all the rain. Talked to a biologist and he said that most Bulls will be completely broken up by the opener. Heard the same thing while I was up there yesterday. Biologist told me that unfortunately the fungus has now spread from the antlers down into the trachea. The fungus has muted the elks vocal cords so bulls physically can't bugle and won't be able to bugle for at least the next 2 months maybe longer.

naturebob Report post Posted September 2, 2015 I guess I will keep this as My official thread for my hunt. I will do a day to day update once I leave North Dakota. Thanks for all the support here on the site. Got lottsa buddies pulling for Me. Now to get the wife to understand leaving for 2 weeks. Ah ,She's ok. Beleive it or not I wasn't excited at first, but the last 3-4 weeks I'm pumped. Tired of knocking this State, but living in ND. its hard to get excited about anything. Sorry Yotebuster on this site is from here but I hated this place the day I got here and still hate it. Can't wait to leave next year. I will even walk away from the mobile home I purchased if I have too.(if oil prices don't go back up) The boom from 4 years ago is now dead up here. I can now make allmost as much in Az. as here with lower living cost..Have to get My work comp. case closed too. I have some Great help on My hunt and should be world class of a hunt. I know it will be better than anything iv'e seen on tv. Elk wise. Hopefully we can film it too ,but main thing is killing a big Bull. Stay tuned. Good things to come from this thread................BOB!

longshooter Report post Posted September 2, 2015 Bob, rumor has it that since its a early rut already that they are predicting the rut to be about over by the end of September this year and something like 99% of the bulls are going to be broke.

Good things to come from this thread................BOB! No hard feelings Bob! If I wasn't born here and didn't have access to 10k prime private acres I probably wouldn't look at it quite the same either! We still have to get together for some oheasants before you go! I've got so dang many at my place here in williston this year I'm afraid they're gonna run off my partridge and grouse! They need to die! If I were in your shoes I'd bail too. It'll always be here if you need to come up and work again. Things will get rolling again someday soon and you'll be able to come back if you wanna out yourself through it again! When I was in AZ for four years I disnt appreciate it for the first few for sure. Now that I'm back I miss it like crazy. Not so much in the summer but a lot in sept and oct and a ton after that!!! Good luck with the elk hunt, I'll be watching this thread like a hawk!!
Havasuhunter Report post Posted September 2, 2015 You guys are making me miss North Dakota a little bit. The Pike fishing was insane this time of year and I miss seeing all the Huns, sharptails and Pheasant. Depending where my rig was, is see Pronghorn, whitetail and Mule deer almost every day too. Has the oilfield traffic calmed way down with the low oil prices? I'd imagine they've stacked most drilling rigs, but priduction has plenty of wells to maintain. We were mostly on the Rez outside of Killdeer.

We were mostly on the Rez outside of Killdeer. Surprisingly it hasn't slowed much in williston. They're down to 80 drilling rigs last I heard but that's pretty good since this will probably be the last time in our lives we'll see oil below $40. If it can survive this it can survive anything if you ask me. I think the outlying areas have been affected more, a lot of companies are actually building new shops and housing in Williston right now to take advantage of the slow down while they can. It's the best thing that's ever happened to this community of you ask me. Allowed for road and housing construction to catch up, got rid of a lot of the riff raff, and brought rent down to a manageable level for most people. That's pretty awesome country around killdeer. A lot of critters running around there. Just got a pic of a 215" velvet Muley a guy shot a few days ago with a bow up there somewhere. Gonna be some big big muleys killed around here in the next couple years!!
Havasuhunter Report post Posted September 2, 2015 Williston was heck on earth when I was there. The infrastructure just couldn't handle it. I lived in Dickinson for a while. Didn't mind Dickinson at all, but I don't plan on ever living up there again unless it's the only place to get away from the Zombie Apocalypse! Just way too cold for me. naturebob Report post Posted September 2, 2015 Ya the Killdeer Mtn's is a neat area, Badlands is cool too, but cant draw tags there. Luckily I got one for the Souris Refuge this year but that is a rarity too. Yotebuster, Your rite. Still jobs in Williston but pat has gone down too. Companies are hiring more leasers so they dont have any truck payments or ins. I am gonna try to work locally in Minot for the winter unless some buddies come up with jobs for Me. We will worry about that after the big Elk hunt ................BOB!.......PS never been pheasant hunting except once as a teen in PA. Would enjoy that.
