rossiranch Report post Posted August 21, 2015 Hey guys, my buddy drew this tag this year and couldn't be more excited about it. Maps have been bought, rifle is being tuned in, and scouting is underway. He was wondering if anyone on here who has had or been on this hunt could offer up any info on if the bulls were still running with the cows at all or if they were already off by themselves. I know it's after the rut but do you think there still might be a few bulls bugleing? Any info is appreciated, and good luck to anyone chasing deer with a bow! Mathews Report post Posted August 21, 2015 They won't be bugling and you're probably not gonna find any big bulls still with cows. Still a fun hunt, though.
rossiranch Report post Posted August 21, 2015 That's kinda what I figured but regardless we are both still pumped for it! Gonna be spending a lot of time through our Kaibab's!
eagle#eyes Report post Posted August 22, 2015 I had the early cow hunt in 10 last year(mid to late October) and there were a few bulls still screaming early on but by the end of the hunt they were done.
mc68 Report post Posted August 22, 2015 There is definitely a chance to hear bugling but it won't be much if you do. I killed a bull about 20 years ago on a late Nov rifle hunt that was running with a herd of cows and I found them because he was bugling every 5-10 minutes. Have heard them a few times since then at that time of year, but not often. Usually the bulls are running in bachelor groups or by themselves. The best bet is to find good glassing points and spend plenty of time looking. They usually stay up feeding a little later in the morning and come back out earlier in the evening at that time of year. Make sure and scout as the hunt gets closer and try and pattern the bulls you find. They seem to pattern pretty well and will hang around that same area unless pushed out by something(hunters or weather). Hope this helps and would like to see the pics of the hunt! Good luck.
rageinthesage Report post Posted August 22, 2015 I had a buddy kill a 330 bull in 7w on the late archery hunt a few years ago and the cows were mewing and the bulls were in a screaming frenzy. I think that was extremely rare but it does happen.
azbcat25 Report post Posted August 22, 2015 I had a buddy that had this hunt last year, he also had a rifle deer tag. He was up there for a month, he filled both tags but nothing to write home about. He said it was a very tough elk hunt, he saw 2 nice Bulls but lost them in the cedars. Good luck.
