When will the rut end?

Recommended Posts

So, I am curious when the rut typically ends?

thr rut stops and starts for several months. to be scientific it depends on when the cows start estrus. then they go in and out until they're all bred or until the time of the year is too late for them to have a calf when they need to have it so the calf can get big enough before the snow to survive. to me, the full moon seems to bring it on stronger, but as in everything in nature, daylight hours is what triggers it. days get short, cows get horny. so basically, it just depends on the year. cornfused yet? if ya ever figger it out, let the rest of us know. it's a mistery sorta like how did the incas make copper chisels and why is casey's family naturally good at playing the banjo. Lark.

p.s- i've seen elk rut like hel l in december. it's like old people diapers, depends.

Hilarious. That's why I can't find a straight answer. Makes sense.

there ain't no tellin' about the rut. i don't have a clue how to predict it, and i know pretty much everthing. one day they will be so crazy it's wierd, and the next day they won't make a peep. and visaversa. best thing to do is hunt everyday, all day long and be in it for the long haul, if you wanna kill a ruttin' bull. but full moons seem to tip em over sometime. other than that, i ain't got any idear. From what I have seen and I'm not saying this is correct everywhere but generally I've seen it get hot and heavy in late August when bulls start getting cows then it can slow down for a while, kick back up middle of September and go til middle-end of october. After that it's pretty hit and miss where I have hunted.

I am asking because I am hunting post-rut, so called, and trying to understand when its complete. I am scouting, but trying to figure out when to focus my time, since post rut scouting is going to be most fruitful.

Short answer is "the day the music died". From my experiences the major tunes end around October 6. The rutting music usually continues intermittently until about November 1 though

They won't be rutting then. I've seen them breed cows and heard bugling that time of year but it's almost always little Bulls that are still hanging with cows that time of year (if any). I would look for Bulls to be bachelor herded up and in the most rugged stuff you can find.

Last year, in Unit 23, we went scouting Veteran's Day weekend (Friday thru Tuesday). Each night, the Bulls erupted at 1am. They continued through 7am, then went silent. The last two mornings, they came in to my bugles. There were 5 different Bulls active each time. It was crazy fun! When we went up two weeks later, we saw one bull (he died) and heard none.

every year you can find herds that are rutting hard into december. not just whistling and making noise, rutting. 2 years ago in u1 there were some buches that acted like it was the first of october. really big bulls with big herds, lots of satelites and lots of cows. really heavy activity. every year is a little different, but until the cows get covered or until the way of the year decides they'll quit estrus, they will rut. usually by mid november you don't see much activity and the really big bulls are batched up and getting away from all that nonsense. but there are exceptions. if you have a late bull tag and want a really big bull, get off in the canyons where they've gone to get away. i wouldn't worry much about the rut bothering you. it's always a good thing when the bulls tell you where they are. great intel, and makes a ton of sense. The bigger bulls I have seen in past years have been in awful locations. brutal to get to, and it really makes you think twice about going after them, knowing you need to pack it out.
