rancilio Report post Posted August 28, 2015 No speculation. Guilty. The guy was cited for trespassing by the sheriff and it is unclear what AZGFD is pursuing, if anything. He changed his story about shooting it "over there and then it ran over here where I had to go on private land... I mean, private land, how could I know it is private." The guy is CHAMP and using it to shoot from the roadway which is clearly wrong. Without speculating too much on the validity of his CHAMP, he drives, although on expired plates, and apparently is ok enough to supervise or manage 3 kids while driving around searching for deer that hang out roadside. Jerk! From AZGFD: A Challenged Access/Mobility Permit (CHAMP) authorizes the holder with a severe permanent disability to take wildlife from a motor vehicle if it is off the roadway and the engine is off and a watercraft as long as the watercraft is not underway. dchamsr06 Report post Posted September 6, 2015 So if the land isn't posted it could be a legal kill. Maybe he was feeding his kids?
wildwoody Report post Posted September 7, 2015 ++1 champs hunt from a truck, don't judge
rancilio Report post Posted September 7, 2015 The land is very clearly posted, no question as to the status of this private property that does not allow trespassers and does not allow hunting. His methods of killing this deer are not about CHAMP. He broke the law and showed the kids what to do and what happens when nobody sees it.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted September 8, 2015 Don't take this post wrong. I hate poachers, and people who twist the laws to fit their own needs. Was the Private Property posted correctly? Every 100' or something like that? If he had a CHAMP permit, and the truck was off the shoulder and turned off, that was a legal take notwithstanding the location. Obesity is not a permanent handicap however. Unless he has other issues with mobility from injury, he is twisting the laws to get that CHAMP permit. Lack of respect of private property is not a handicap as well.
