Lots of forest service guys carry bolt cutters. Lots o forest service workers cut down trail cams..not just the leo's. If you leave it out around flag it will be cut down...and not by hunters, but forest service or hippies. Hide it well and you wont have to worry as much. Put it on a water hole by mormon lake and as he found out it will be gone.

 

Red Sparky you can be pissed all you want but the fact is, if forest service sees one out in the forest for a period of time they take it. No justification, i could care less either way, but that is what happens majority of the time.

I am not pissed about anything. Well except for thieves making excuses under "abandoned property" to steal stuff. If they have no regulations on them as quoted from their own page, then they really can't touch them legally. Nothing in their own regs say I can't put one out for 365 days a year so they can't take it down. Same thing with traps set and checked legally, if you are following the rules and regs, they can't touch them. Ever hear of cops losing evidence and getting sued under illegal seizure?

 

Funny thing is I went to the FS here and said I lost a trail cam and wonder if it had been "impounded". Response was they don't have the manpower to do that unless they get a report of a damaged tree. My bet it is some tree hugger PETA type people stealing them, might be poachers who go out and hunt them down so they won't get caught, might be like hunting sheds but they hunt game cams instead. Doesn't really matter as a thief is a thief. I really wonder how many of the "abandoned cameras" end up on Craigslist, EBAY, or pawn shops.

Camps can't be abandoned for more than 24 hours. I would bet they can apply the same rules to trail cameras. They write the rules and change them as needed to meet their agenda.

So, how does one (read: FS employee) know when I placed my camera? Do they "chalk the tires" like the meter maids in big cities? When does my clock start ticking on my free 24-hrs before it becomes abandoned? If I move it from one tree to another, in the same general area, does my clock restart? How does one know?

It's gotten so dang competitive out there, just to kill an animal, that some guys are losing their minds, morals, and ethics.

Competition is still going on, I hung mine up and a week later a guy put his like 10 feet from mine. No biggie first guy there gets to hunt the spot is the way i look at it,plus i have lots more area’s i can hunt.

Hunt were nobody else does, problem solved:) But seriously, I've had very little problems with any units in the 15s through 18s when the camera is hid half decent or a hike in. These units see only a fraction of the traffic the higher mountains and more popular units do.

• Tree stands are permitted if they do not cause resource damage i.e. cutting limbs, putting nails and bolts into trees or any other permanent alteration/injury to trees or surrounding vegetation. Tree stands need to be removed after daily use. Tree stands left unoccupied for any extended period of time is prohibited. Title 36 CFR 261.9(a) and 262.13.
• Currently there is no specific regulation regarding game cameras left in the forest. The forest service does not recommend leaving any property in the forest. Game cameras have been frequently reported stolen.
• There are new rules for motor vehicle use on the Forest. All motor vehicles must stay on designated roads and trails as shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). Driving off of designated roads for elk retrieval is allowed in Game Management Units 6A, 6B, 7E, 7W, and 8; but driving off of designated roads for game retrieval is not allowed under any circumstances in game units 5A, 5BN, 5BS, or 11M. You can get an electronic copy of the map, which shows all of the designated routes here or get a hard copy of the map at any Coconino National Forest office and most of the outdoor retail stores around Flagstaff. The Forest strongly suggests using the map on your Garmin GPS or smartphone. Instructions on how to do this are located here.
