bowsniper Report post Posted June 18, 2007 I picked up my September 2006 buck from the taxidermist yesterday. Here is a picture: Here is a picture with the December 2004 buck. I have never really compared two mounts side by side, so I was a little surprized to see the different facial features in each buck. I'm trying to decide, are the bucks really that different looking in the face, or is the difference in the different taxidermists that I used for each? 105Coues Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Awesome bucks!!! Can I tag along this year? My guess would be they used different forms and the muscle structure on one is more pronounced than the other.
COOSEFAN Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Those are both beautiful bucks! From what I know, two taxidermists can be completely different from each other. Taxi's use different materials and have different ideas on what "looks" anatomically correct to "them" and incorperate that into their work. It is definitely appearant in your mounts that two different taxi's did the work. I think both mounts look great though......wish I had them on my wall JIM>
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Beatifull, oustanding bucks and mounts!! Congrats. Mark, do you know if the taxidermists had to cut off the mold to make the mounts look "side ways" or almost bradside? That's the way I want my mount from my Sonora buck. Thanks Mark and again congratulations on those beatifull bucks and mounts. Ernesto C.
DesertBull Report post Posted June 19, 2007 I think the hard horned buck is just physically much bigger and more mature than the velvet one. Notice how much bigger it's ears, chest and neck are. The only thing that might be questioned is that the velvet bucks eyes are more forward facing (like a predator's eyes) and the hard horned buck's eyes are more side facing. Either way, they are both fantastic, IMO.

WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Beautiful bucks, I have two coues on the wall next to each other, both look good but look different. I agree with above posts, each taxi is just a little different.
AZcoues_addict Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Really good looking mounts there to be proud of! The differences in look are probably due to the taxidermist in the nose, eyes, and special attention areas. However, I'd bet most of the hide and facial coloring is natural and untouched, so it is most likely natural differences there or due to the time of year when they were taken? Thanks for sharing your trophies!
bowsniper Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Ernesto, This type of mount is called a pedistal mount. I don't know if the form was cut to do the mount, but I can take some pictures of the back side if you like. Let me know. Mark
coueshunter Report post Posted June 19, 2007 Great looking bucks. I would bet the differences may be in the mold each taxidermist uses. either way, they are nice looking bucks...........Allen.........

TAM Report post Posted June 20, 2007 Nice deer! I think a lot of the differences have to do with the time of year when the deer were harvested. Late season deer will have thicker necks, faces, and bodies than early season deer. Also the coloration will be different at different times of the year.
