Viper Report post Posted August 11, 2015 I find the raspberries on top of the Rim on open hillsides and ridgetops, in the old burn areas (Dude fire I presume) where they get plenty of sun. From what I read in this post, it sounds like the blackberries are in the canyon/creek bottoms. That's interesting.
Viper Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Back in WA we tried to avoid the black berries. People literally went into BlackBerry patches and never came back. I'll b looking for bb and raspberry next couple days We did a road trip in August 2005 that took us through WA and OR. I couldn't believe all the Blackberries...the size of your thumb!! ...and nobody picking them!! We played the obvious tourist and pulled off the road every chance we got to refill our cups. What a treat! Also hit the Huckleberry season in Montana...Huckleberry beer, wine, ice cream....great stuff!

What a treat! Also hit the Huckleberry season in Montana...Huckleberry beer, wine, ice cream....great stuff! An illegal fell asleep driving on the I-5 just south of Seattle. Went into the medium which was a sea of BlackBerry climbing up the other vegetation and over 8' tall. A Hiway mowing crew found him and his car a month after he drove into it. I probably drove past him 20 times. Driving into that stuff would look like driving into the bat cave. Everything just gets swallowed up.

PelaPapas Report post Posted August 12, 2015 I just picked about 5 lbs of wild blackberries last weekend. Found a mile long patch in a creek bottom and picked so many but we hardly scratched the surface. And they are blackberries for sure not raspberries. Have never even seen wild raspberries in Az. Blackberries are everywhere. I have see raspberries in the top of Oak Creek. We went up to Oak Creek a few weeks back for some camping. We ran into some blackberries down by the creek but I wasn't sure if they were ripe yet as most were half red/black? When is best time to pick these and eat em? AverageJoe Report post Posted August 12, 2015 You want to wait til they are all black but not wrinkled at all. If one or two of the little pods are red they will be ok just a tad more tangy.
