I got lost when I was 14 on a deer hunt in 4A. I spent the long, cold night in a hollow log. The next morning, I found a road, and got picked up by another hunter and he drove me back to my camp. I was 4 miles away. The Sheriff Dept. had put out a search party already. My Dad was so mad/happy/relieved/proud.

He also told me to never, ever, under any circumstance, tell my Mom what happened. And I haven't.

I have never, to this day, seen him cry harder than he did that day. I could not imagine what he went through that night.

We even finished the hunt...unsuccessfully.

I got lost chasing a bugle when I was about 18 years old. I was hiking/camping alone and couldn't find camp in the dark for about 2 hours, I finally spotted a familiar lightning strike tree's silhouette against the night sky and realized where I was (about 2 miles from camp). To make it worse, like an invincible 18 year old (in my mind) ,didn't even tell anyone I was going to be camping or where I was going to. Just got caught up in following that buck, and stopped paying attention to the sun and which way I was going, and it got dark on me fast, like it normally does... It scarred and scared me for life.. So, now I get paranoid when my GPS batteries dip below 50%, anytime past noon.

I can't imagine the memories for those of you who were lost at such young age. At least I knew enough to start thinking about staying warm, for the night, before I finally figured out where I was...

Poor Kid, and Poor Parents. Really heartbreaking to imagine your kid shivering alone in the woods..
