Deer rifle caliber for teen

Recommended Posts

.338 Lapua mag

All joking aside, some of the folks listed some excellent calibers. My first hunting rifle was my pops old .303 British, with a shortned stock, cool old gun. Congrats to your youngster on the tag and good luck!

The ol 250-3000 gets my vote. A 115 Berger at 2800 plus is more than enough for just about anything in Arizona with less recoil than a .243. My nephew has used his to take elk no problem and I have taken deer at 663 yards with mine. Awesome caliber for youth.

any of the .25s or 6.5s... lots of good choices for rifles and off the shelf ammo for the 6.5CM

.243 is what my kids still shoot today unless they are chasing elk. Other than that I would recommend a .270 or a 7mm 08.

+2 on the 6.5 creedmoor. Real nice caliber, fun to shoot, can get high bc bullets to help with stretching it out there.

Two of my boys have savage model 11 trophy hunters in creedmoor they shoot very nice and do the job well. I bought my wife an older Fn mauser 243 that stomps brother did a really nice job on the stock i wish i had done before and after pics its a really sweet rifle as well.

Another vote for the .257 Roberts. I'm have my 9 year old shooting it now. I received a Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts for my 16th birthday and have shot a lot of game with it. It will be my son's gun in 1 year.

With my kids, I will be trying to stay away from breaks . Flash and noise are just as likely to contribute to developing poor habits as recoil.

Yeah 6.5's are pretty sweet rounds. 6.5 Grendel as well as creedmore.

Grendel will not have the velocity of creedmore so 500 be right about the max I would think for deer, though people have taken elk @400yrds with it. Nice thing about it is that it is a very very mellow recoil round, and with the 6.5 bullet high BC flies really far. In terms of target shootong guys regularly shoot them to 1k, and one guy shot 1760 a few weeks ago. It is now a Saami spec round also, Hornady makes some great factory ammo for target & hunting.

It fits in std AR platform, so if you have a few of them you can get a barrel/bolt combo and some magazines and convert an existing AR. Saves $ and some of the young generation will stay more interested being an AR platform. Mine has a $300 18"barrel/bolt and shoots .6MOA all day long.

GL and congrats for your son, great to see families passing on hunting!
