Mog Report post Posted July 30, 2015 I am thinking of getting a lower end pair of binos for my 4 year olds birthday. He is obsessed with my optics but cant let him play with the higher end stuff. I am considering vortex diamondback compact 8x28s due to price point, size, and warranty. Anyone with experience think this is a good move? Is there another pair that makes more sense? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Vortexreg-Diamondback-8x28-Compact-Binoculars/1401367.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3FrecordsPerPage%3D18%26No%3D0%26N%3D0%26nl%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DVortex%2Bdiamondback%26search%3DSearch&No=0&Ntt=Vortex+diamondback
bgshooter Report post Posted July 30, 2015 Wow. You're a nice dad. I bought my 8 & 10 year old some $15 glass from Cabelas to play with LOL.
218buck Report post Posted July 30, 2015 I bought my daughter some cheap glass when she first started hunting, just because she always wanted to look through my 15x 56 swaros . She figured out the difference right away was always asking to look through them. I had to go upgrade hers right away some vortex and a tripod now she doesn't bug me as much. But at 4 some cheapies will work fine you can have her old ones if you want I live in north scottsdale
eom Report post Posted July 30, 2015 My son loves hunting fishing and anything outdoors.... He just turned 9 and said next year all he wants for his birthday is his hunting license and a pair of vortex binos I will be getting him the diamondback 10x42
Mog Report post Posted July 30, 2015 I hear ya on the price and i thought about the cheapies but i figured with those i would probably have to replace them every year and with the vortex and their warranty these would get good use for a long time. To be honest im probably too excited he likes looking through binos to find critters and i feel like im shopping for me haha.
Norteno Report post Posted July 30, 2015 You could look at the Vortex Crossfire 10x42 which run less than the Diamondbacks. ($170) You could also try the Alpen Pro 10x42 ($100). Alpen warranty is as good or better than Vortex. Either way I would go used on either of these brands
apache12 Report post Posted July 30, 2015 Check out bass pro Oculus. I have a pair of 8x42 for beating around and find myself using often. I was shocked
mudslinger Report post Posted August 7, 2015 My 4 and 5 year old want some Binos also. The vortex seems no brainer with there warranty. My kids have had the tascos but they just bounce around and fall apart I think I am going to buy them a Rick young bino harness and that will help them to take care of them. Titanium700 Report post Posted August 9, 2015 Bought my son the vortex 8x32s Diamondbacks, he really likes them. I just couldn't bear making him use some junk binos straining his developing eyes.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted August 9, 2015 My kids have always used the Cabela's brand binos that run is the $250 range, I finally sold them off last year and handed down my Cabela's Outfitter series 10x42s that run about $550. Garbage glass always gave me headaches after an hour or so, and I didn't want my kids learning that glassing=pain. I think the Vortex Diamondback is a no brainer. Decent entry level glass with a great warranty.
Mog Report post Posted August 9, 2015 Good information everyone thank you. Ive been researching and i actually think the diamondback 8x32 is better than the 8x28 compacts for longevity (the 8x28 model is really small). And i can get the 8x32 demo model from cameralandny for basically the same price. From what i can tell these can even be mounted on a tripod with the vortex adapter i have for my kaibabs, i think this is the route im gonna go.
Titanium700 Report post Posted August 9, 2015 I think you and he will be happy with that glass.
Kaffer62 Report post Posted August 10, 2015 Bought a pair of minox 8x42 for him from Cameraland. $120 and they are great binos.
rcdinaz Report post Posted August 11, 2015 at 4 years old mine played with a crummy little pair of stadium binos. At 10 years old they were respectful enough and careful enough that they have been using a set of 10x42 swaro's and 8x42 Lupy gold rings. Of course they are ruined for life now looking through most other glass but I have not had any issues now for 6 years. That being said sounds like you are making a good choice.
