khmer6 Report post Posted August 19, 2015 Looking real versatile. The standard action is great as it can fit just about any gun with a mag bolt face. 7rm. 300wm. 338wm. No problem to re barrel. Been comparing the different weights and velocity. Trajectory pretty much stays the same.
.270 Report post Posted August 20, 2015 one of the smartest things ruger did in developing it was using a case with the same rim size as the belted cases. don't have to do any bolt work to get it to fit. either .375 ain't a real good long range gun, but look to be better than good to 400 and not bad at 500 and when they get there they're bringin an @$$ whoopin' with em. i'm really excited about using the h&h this year. billrquimby Report post Posted August 20, 2015 Hey Lark: You and I are old enough to remember when 400 to 500 yards was long range, and anyone who couldn't get closer to an animal than that didn't deserve to be called a hunter. That was before rangefinders and today's dial-up scopes, of course. Bill Quimby
khmer6 Report post Posted August 20, 2015 4-500 is considered above long range to me :-) they can dial and check laser distance all they want, but they still have to take into account the wind and terrain etc. So i'll leave those long range sniper shots to the pros :-D I topped her off with a Vortex Viper. Was too hot last weekend to sight it in. maybe this weekend
billrquimby Report post Posted August 20, 2015 Khmer6: I don't want to get into a spitting match with long-range fans, but I agree 1000%! Bill Quimby
.270 Report post Posted August 20, 2015 i remember when that was a long ways for ordinary guys. i usually shoot a .270 and am probably the best shot in the world, so distance has never been an obstacle. just depends on how far i feel like packin' one out. one of the reasons i thought i'd shoot a .375 this year is because i got a little soft on this job and i don't feel like walking so far to pack em out. my grandad told me once that i shot stuff so far away that i had to salt my bullets, in order to keep em from spoilin' before i got to it. up until about 5 years ago i shot with my rifle over my shoulder, using a mirror to look at the sights. on running game anyway. if it was standing i'd shot the same way, but left handed. billrquimby Report post Posted August 21, 2015 First liar doesn't have a chance, Lark. I knew a guy who knew a guy who was the champion long-distance shooter of Gila Bend. That guy would shoot deer so far away that he had to run like heck to get to the carcass before it rotted. (The salt in his one bullet simply wasn't enough.) He usually left his rifle behind and carried only a knife, fork and some pepper, salt, and hot sauce in those little packages from Taco Bell plus a little rock to suck on if he got thirsty when he ran to his buck. His deer always were too far away to pack even half a backstrap out, so he ate them where they dropped. Bill Quimby
.270 Report post Posted August 21, 2015 some years back i shot a big ol' bull off in a ugly canyon in 27. as me and the guy i was with were looking at it, i asked if he brought a frying pan? he said hel l no, why? i said i saw a salt lick in a saddle above us. if he had a frying pan we'd just camp out there a couple days and eat this thing instead o' packin' it out. but he didn't have one, so we skunt it and hung it up and went back with horses the next day. billrquimby Report post Posted August 21, 2015 Heck, Lark. What kind of hunter doesn't carry a frying pan? You'd think he'd learn just by hanging around with the best shot in the world. Bill Quimby

khmer6 Report post Posted August 24, 2015 Tried some loads with RL17 and 300gr Game kings. Very promising so far and pressure signs at the upper end were nothing of concern. 105 degree weather, no sticky bolt. Time to fine tune and tweak. Didn't want to blow up my chrony this session, but would guess the velocity around 2700+. Wasn't really shooting for groups but they would of easily been under 1" if not better. Will need to set up some time to shoot these loads over the chrony
