Hunt from horse back

Recommended Posts

When I worked cattle on the Eagle Creek with Dean Warren we would see so many animals on horse back. It was great. I never tried to shoot off one of his horses but I know for a fact you can do it 1 time for sure. Now down in Louisiana all my horses were trained to be able to crack a whip and shoot a gun. The whip came first as working cattle in the marsh it was needed to move the cattle. Then the guns were next. Pretty much bullet proof horses there. Miss it too.

If you don't have cows to chase horses just eat money and sh!t work...........but I sure miss being able to go saddle one up and go for a ride and they make good hunting camp partners, you can tell them anything you want and they don't blab next time they are at the bar

Then come along on a pack or scouting ride sometime. Always got horses looking for work.

We're always looking for hay deals, write off two animals by training with MCSO Search and Rescue, do our own hoof work, have cheap pasture and not afraid to sell an animal.

No. I wish I did. I had a great place up north of town but got married and had to move cuz of the kids and not enough room and blah blah. I was team roping at the time and had a great jackpot horse.

I definitely am not a cowboy, but I had horses and a mule that I hunted with when I was younger. They took me places I never would have gone on foot and packed out the game I shot.

My horses and mule would spot game long before I did, but I'd have to get some distance from the horses before I would shoot.

The mule paid no attention to gunfire. I'd jump off her, pull my rifle out of the scabbard and rest it over the saddle, and she would hold her breath and stand perfectly still until I fired. She packed every lion, deer, elk and javelina that I loaded on her, but she refused to have anything to do with a bear.

She was a lot smarter than I was. I'd let her know where I wanted to go and give her free rein and she'd find the best way up or down a ridge or through brush.
