Not your Honey Holes ;)

Recommended Posts

Okay,

So I have to be that guy. Forgive me but I'm looking to snag some info on the fall buff hunts in 12a. I am a DIY hunter and understand the work required but I am looking to get a good head start from the friends @ CWT.. (had to put my disclaimer before people put me on blast)

I am hoping to get a good idea of the water and salt locations north of the park. I know where one is but I'm looking for a few more.

I have my fingers crossed they will be outside of the park for the hunt (either the 9/25 rifle or the 9/11 12ae ONLY hunts).

Any other info you'd be willing to share would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for looking!

If you haven't scouted 100 days straight and quit your job to dedicate your time to this hunt,

Don't even ask! 😅😅😅

Just kidding, hope some guys help you out. Congrats on drawing an awesome hunt.

I don't know anything about this hunt, but the jay scott podcast about buffalo hunting with Russ Jacoby was really good. He gives his contact info at the end and said he will be glad to help anyone out, even if you don't book a hunt with him. It would be a good start for sure. The guy sounds like a buffalo nut

you need to hunt the fence line along the Park, they trot into the Park when the first gun goes off. Not a lot of roads along the boundary so going to be a lot of footback travel. Like all Az hunting find the water. May look into what type of packing is available, have heard of one guy that helps with his backhoe and another with a pack string. Otherwise invite 12 friends and go in with a frying pan and salt shaker and come out in a week.

Take the post from GrayGhost85 very seriously! My buddy's Dad had a tag this spring and even though he didn't hire Russ, he got in touch with him. Russ was able to help him find an area to hunt and he was successful killing a bull the very next day I believe! Talk to everyone you can but definitely get a hold of that guy!

Good Luck and Congratulations on your draw success!

You NEED to listen to the Jay Scott Podcast on hunting these Buffalo! I find all of his podcast enjoyable to listen to when in the truck for long periods of time. Just plug the phone into the headphone jack and listen away. Good job J!

it's not like your first post was asking for where to start in a unit you're never been to cause you don't have time to scout and your only asking for info about spots with b&c animals.

It's a buffalo tag.

If I have a honey hole up there I'd give it to you.

For what it's worth I've seen a few in 26m.

No.

On the pod cast he said they are outside of the park more in the fall (lack of water in the park).

Here are some things that you might find helpful to prepare you for your trip.

2014 Fall Hunter Clinic.

Jay Scott and Russ Jacoby talk about the Kaibab buffalo

http://jayscottoutdoors.podbean.com/e/episode-9-arizona-buffalo-herd-in-the-house-rock-valley-and-kaibab-plateau/

Habimap is your friend. Imagery to see the open spots & Topo for the road numbers - Do not drive on any road that's within a mile of the park boundary. Hike it.

http://habimap.org/habimap/

Check access conditions before going. (Like when the gate is open and closed as well how to access the area during a winter hunt)

North Kaibab Ranger District
430 South Main Street
PO Box 248
Fredonia, AZ 86022
(928) 643-7395
Fax: (928) 643-8105

Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center
Hwy. 67 and 89A
Jacob Lake, AZ 86022
(928) 643-7298

It doesn't show them all but it's a start for maps of water holes.

Simply because it's a good read before you head up to hunt the majestic creature or save it for when you're in the blind hours on end.

http://www.amazon.com/American-Buffalo-Search-Lost-Icon/dp/0385521693

I also recommend hitting Youtube & Vimeo and searching for 'bison' and 'American buffalo' videos, even the greeny documentaries. The goal is to observe every buffalo you can to try and identify a bull from a cow if you have a cow only tag.

Aim low. Vitals on a buffalo are in the bottom 1/3 of the beast but more importantly because that hump will through you off so if you shoot center of mass you're way high already... Or so I'm told. I never fired a shot so I don't have any experience in this arena. Start setting aside every magazine you subscribe to, don't ready it, just put it in a stack. You'll have plenty of time to read them sitting in the blind during the hunt.
