Fishing the canal

Recommended Posts

I caught a few bass up in the canal near Kiwanis park. I was surprised I had more luck in the canal than the actual lake. My apologies, the picture is slightly blurred.

Great bass. I fish the canal behind work alot. Grab some biscuit dough some circle hooks and a small bobber, aboit 16-26 inc of leader and cast it to far side of canal. Then follow it down stream as it goes and be ready. We catch 12- 26 lb carp and amur, 2-6lb catfish. Its alot of fun. Use to flyfish it for bass and panfish. Most people never think to fish the canal but for catch and release its a blast.

Wow! I am not completely new to Arizona; Its been approximately 1 1/2 years so far, but I never realized how popular the canals were.

Ha, yeah! Next time I'll have to make sure the "full size" off the bass is taken. I'm still learning the proper "presentation" .. :D

I have a friend who fishes them with his grandkids all the time. I am pretty sure since SRP owns them you do not need a fishing license to fish them.

Canals can be awesome and close to home for a lot of people. I fish whatever water is near me when traveling. Small park ponds and canals can hold some real treasures.

Are they safe to eat? Or catch and release only?

Should be eatable.. also im pretty sure you need fishing license since the map of canals is in G&F regs and waterways papers

Like what was said above. An az fishing license is required and all white armur must be released since these are owned by SRP and are used to clean the canal. They save SRP thousands of dollars in manpower and equipment cost. :)

I fished the canal to try out some new lures. The canal in my area is not srp so the fish in there are definitely not for eating. But I went for just catch and release for bass. Just wondering what anyone else uses to catch bass in a canal. I must have used 10 different lures and spent half a day in there. Bass were jumping a little but not striking. I could even see fish near the edges of the canal but it just wasn't my day. All I caught was a little sunburn.
