Unit 37B, Any Deer left?

Recommended Posts

Ok, after taking in all the reply's and contemplating this all weekend (with the help of a few too many cold brews)

I have decided to fill out my apps as follows:

1st choice: unit 33 late white tail

2nd choice: unit 32 late white tail

3rd choice: unit 37b Muley (while also applying for Javelina in the same unit)

This will be the first time I have applied for Mule deer, let alone hunted Javelina in the Fall.

Thanks for all your input, and good luck in the draw.

Unless the unit is a 100% draw of 1st and 2nd choice applicants then it won't really matter what you put for choices 3-5. Choices 1 and 2 are what they consider first if you are drawn, then if they're not available they throw your app back in the pile until all first and second choices have bee sifted through.

I think you may have had one to many beers!

Only 1/3 of the people who put 37b as their 1st choice will draw the tag so you don't stand a chance of drawing it as your 3rd choice.

I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers, just trying to help you out.

I think if those are your choices you won't have a tag this year depending on your 4th and 5th of course.

Of those units you listed, your best strategy would be to choose either the 33 or 32 late hunt as 1st choice, and 37B as 2nd.

Yep put down them brewski's.

I second what DB said

37b will not be a good 3rd choice if you are going to choose 32-33 late as your first and second. You are just

pretty much throwing your third choice away. :(

Yes, I understand the odds are against me with theses choices.

Over the last 27 years I have pulled a late WT tag 8 times in unit 32, and 7 times in unit 33, and the rest of those years I have pulled a November WT tag ( not including the 04 and 05 years when I didnt get drawn)

So I play the odds and hope to get the December tag.

Otherwise I just get out the trusty old PSE compound and go rut hunting!!! ;)

There is nothing wrong with your 1st and second choices. Were just saying that 37b is a 37% of getting drawn on the 1st

and second choice so it never will go to the third choice. ;)

There are more pigs than deer, without a doubt. Almost major every wash has a herd.

I'm not familiar w/ the west part of the unit, but have found the opposite of this to be true. It took me seven or eight trips to find my first herd of pigs this year, but I saw deer every day. Of course, this was also the first year I hunted that unit.

I usually have to kick pigs and bobcats out of my way as I'm stalking bucks down there.

Some guys got all the luck. I'm following you from now on. I had to work way to hard in Jan for one little javi!

Everyone tells me that there's a ton of pigs out there, but I sure didn't see 'em. I was kickin muleys out of the way looking for pigs. Actually, I was spooking 'em, thus the empty deer tag. <_< Anyhow, it's defenitely nice, rugged country out there, and there are some nice deer, but they'll make you work for it, at least in the spots that I frequent.
