Would you re-barrel a DPMS 260 AR

Recommended Posts

I have spent countless hours trying to get my DPMS 260 AR to shoot sub MOA. Regardless of any ammo I put thru it the best I can get is 1 1/2 to 2 moa. The most recent 500 yard grouping was HORRIBLE. It was over 12 inch group size.

I really want an accurate AR in either 260 or 6.5 creedmoor. I found several companies who have match grade barrels in stock for both calibers. I'm wondering if the componets on the DPMS are worth putting a $500 barrel on it?

Have any of you re-barreled a DPMS AR10? If so what were the results?

Thanks,

Adam

I'm not super experienced in AR's and accuracy, but it would seem to me a above average barrel paired with an above average trigger would lead you to better accuracy. My ar 15 .223 shoots sub moa, and while I don't know much about the upper other than it was made by Tonys custom uppers with a 20" 1:8" bull barrel, it's a shooter.

Twist of barrel? What bullets? How's your crown?

Proven scope?

The current gun has a 1:8.5 twist. I've tried 120-130's. The best so far has been with the 130's, but the best group has been a little over an inch. Not sure on my crown. I will have to look at it.

Do you guys feel the DPMS upper is good enough to add a match grade barrel to it?

Thanks,

Adam

What stock are you using? are you getting consistent and solid cheek wield? even an 1/8 of in inch cheek wild can throw a shot all over the place at range.

My pof 308 was 2 inches at 100 yards till I put on a better stock with adjustable cheek wield. then it tightened up to .5 - 1" with most ammo.

I have intended to add the magpul PRS stock to the gun after getting a new barrel. You brought up a good point. Maybe I will get the stock first and give it a try.

I have heard that the AR is more accurate in the 6.5 cm than the .260 and all around better gas gun with the 6.5 CM. I also heard that you do not want to use the H4350 in the gas gun like the normal bolt. Did you ever try like Varget with a 130 bullet?

Also what you are trying to achieve is better in a bolt gun for accuracy. Don't get me wrong the gas gun can be accurate but not like the bolt. Try loooking at the shilen barrel with bolt start there I know shilen makes great products.

Ya your DPMS is good enough as any other to build onto. Go for it.

I decided to just go for it. I just ordered a 24 inch bull barrel in 260 from Lilja Barrles. Everything I have read about the company was fantastic! Plus they had several barrels in stock! I should have the new barrel on the gun by the end of next week.

Anyone have a Magpul PRS stock for sale?????

You should be good. I've put together a heap of em in the last few years. The AR platform will really surprise you with a proper torque on a quality free floated barrel and good trigger squeeze there is not much left to affect the accuracy. Your upper is plenty good enough to get the accuracy you're after. The only disadvantage to the design (or any AR) is the mounting of a long heavy barrel can really leverage some stress into the threaded portion of the upper.

Good luck to you and post your results. Also checkout the new 6.5 Berger 130gr Hybrid. Fits your application perfectly!

Thanks for the info. I'm currently shooting the Berger 130 in my current barrel. Just could not get good repeatable accuracy. I'll let you guys know in a few weeks how it shoots with the new barrel.

If it shot better with the 130's why not try the 140's. Since the barrel seems to be picky I would start with a 140 or 142 Sierra Match King with a nice tangent ogive to avoid the sometimes finicky Berger seating depths and magazine constraints.

If the bullets in the green box don't shoot then you got a problem somewhere for sure.

I tried the 140's and they would not work. I tried 120-140's with little success. The new 130 ar hybrid should work perfectly in my new barrel. That's if I can find any. If not I'm sure the regular 130's will work just fine. The new barrel has a 1:8 twist so it should shoot the 140's just fine. I will find out soon.

you can always use some foam mousepads and duct tape to make a cheekrest to be sure that's not the problem as well. just be sure to clear the charging handle so you don't end up cutting it off just to get it into battery.
