If they are on my property or acting aggressive in a place that might get someone bit, I'll kill them. Otherwise I leave them alone.
idgaf Report post Posted June 28, 2015 Wow, who knew rattlesnakes were such a touchy subject. From the age of 8 or 9 to 13 or 14 I would make money killing snakes and woodpeckers from our neighbors. In the summertime two neighbors would pay me 5 dollars a snake and a third would pay me ten. They wanted them dead because of their horses and dogs. I literally killed hundreds. At the time I did not know any better that it was hot and it was miles between neighbors all I could think of was my twenty bucks. Filet the backstrap out of a rattler and then fry in grease. Very few people will believe this, but one of the last ones I killed my nephew was stepping on as I was drawing back on a mountain lion.

Flatlander79 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 A 4' I got off usery pass while dove hunting it never made a sound as I walk up to it so took his head off with 12 gauge. My fatherinlaw skinned it and I tacked it out on a board to dry. The Cambodian neighbors ate it and said it was good. I came across a green Mohave that was loud as heck from 10 yards a way I let him live as he at least gave a warning from a distance.
PhxDT Report post Posted June 29, 2015 It's just another reasons the Arizona Wilderness is unique. I love seeing them, but only take them down if there's a direct threat.
idgaf Report post Posted June 29, 2015 My favorite rattlesnake death for me not so much my middle brother was the one I shot with my 454 casul. It was at dusk and I shoot it blowing its head off and launching it 1 or 2 seconds into the air at a slight pitch. It lands on my brothers foot, making him dance like he was MC Hammer. My other brother and me start laughing so hard we fall on the ground. He called us names.
muleskinner Report post Posted June 29, 2015 If you see them before they strike, the threat is over. Never heard of one chasing anyone down to bite them. If you can't outrun a rattler you don't need to be outside your house. Used to encounter bunches of them when coon hunting on the San Pedro from San Manuel down to Benson. Only had one dog bitten in 11 years. Had more trouble with Javelina than rattlers. Hunted with bird dogs north of Oracle Junction and never had a dog get bit. The threat thing is a tad over dramatic. The stats will tell you that your not too likely to get bit, and if you do you probably won't die. In spite of your wifes best efforts!
wyguy Report post Posted June 29, 2015 Thank you... Now i will be waking up screaming in the middle of the night due to snakes in my dreams... I hate snakes... Almost worse than I hate Obama... Really funny though I took a Vertebrate Zoology class (as part of my Forestry major) and I did the best in the unit about snakes... the only animals I can say I hate)
Havasuhunter Report post Posted June 29, 2015 I've stepped on about 10 different rattlers, never bit. They were all southern Pacifics in CA out in these hills I'd hunt coyotes and shoot ground squirrels with the 22. Think it was all the ground squirrel holes, huge population of those snakes out there. I was always wearing boots when I stepped on them and it was cold, so they didn't even try to strike. Still freaked me out. I'm not against killing them when they may harm people, but going out of your way to kill them way out in their natural habitat is not something I understand. The people that say kill every snake regardless of species are just flat ignorant and I don't mind calling those people ignorant. Hunters are supposed to be responsible stewards of the land. Killing every one of a certain critter you see for no other reason than you don't like how they look is beyond me.
resolute Report post Posted June 29, 2015 Here is one I took out last week. 16-17 rattles. It was over 5' long. Tried to get it to leave my job site but was pretty stubborn. I'll post pics of body soon. I will kill on site and not feel bad at all. Had one come in our dog door two years ago and had to shoot it in my dining room.
