An idea on hunt opportunity

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine who has been an avid hunter for over 25 years brought up this idea. What if hunters were only allowed to apply for one species per year? So if you were drawn for elk, you could not apply for deer or sheep. This would make people decide what hunt is more important and then instead of one hunter getting three tags, three hunters get one tag. This will increase opportunity, but AZGFD will still have to get a clue to get tag numbers where they need to be. This idea has some good points and I wanted to know everyones opinion. Thanks guys and girls.

You mean 1st choice sheep, 2nd choice elk, 3rd choice, deer, 4th choice pig, 5th choice turkey?

I would rather apply for all species and have a chance to hunt more than one big game per year.

It would never happen because game and fish would lose revenue.

Guess I'll act like a salmon and try and swim against the current.

That really isn't a bad idea. One species won't fly, but if you limited it to 2 (two) fall hunts and 1 (one) spring hunt, that might spread people out alittle. How that would apply to juniors I don't know. I think they should get more tags than they get now and be able to apply for everything.

Thinking 'outside the box' maybe the way to end the hunter-vs-G&F battle that rages every year.

I think you would need to look at why some draw multiple tags and some draw none. Is it the unit choice? number of bonus points? How many years since they have drawn? Some people beat the odds and get lucky, but I think some want to make the exception the rule and think many people get multiple tags.

Utah has that you can only apply for one species, but this is for limited entry hunts and one can still apply for the general hunts, and Utah has more game.

What are the number of hunters and total lnumber of tags? Does it work out that there would be one tag per person? If it went to one species only, I think you would see a greater choice for elk initially since it is the most popular/desired species.

No, I'll take my chances and wish to apply for all species, and hope for one. Would like the hope that I could draw elk, sheep and/or deer and not be eliminated by having to select just one species.

Would your friend want a preference point system for each species, knowing it would be 5-10 years before he will draw a bull elk tag and cannot hunt anything else in the meantime?

I would be all for it, except that like mentioned above, G&F would never do it because of dollars.

Actually, I would prefer a modification of Utah's method.

Antelope or Sheep

plus

Deer or Elk

its a bad idea..... you'd be taking away hunter opportunity for people rather then adding to it. say you can only put in for deer. then you don't get drawn. now your s.o.l. because you were limited to one species. with multiple species to put in for at least you have the chance to hunt something even if your not drawn for one species.
