ring height

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have decided to put the xtreme hardcore 20 moa base on my new savage LRH 300 win mag & I am going to use there rings as well. I have decided to go with a Vortex pst 6 x 24 x 50 scope what height rings should I use with this setup low medium or high. Thanks in advance for any input as this long range stuff is all new to me & I am trying to learn & get the best setup for my first long range rig.

From what I understand the lower the better. You just have to be careful about how much room you have in your scope. Hence the high vs low and different rails. The higher you set your scope essentially the farther you can shoot with the turrets. If you can shoot to your desired longest yardages with the low rings then there's really no reason to have high ones. Just have to figure out your ballistics, decide how far you are shooting, and compare that to how much room you have in the scope. Hope that makes sense.

I use the lowest rings I can get on my rifles. Even with a 20MOA base and 56mm objective on a 34mm tube, medium rings (.92") clear just fine on mine with a Sendero contour barrel. Plenty of clearance for scope caps too. I wish I could find low rings in my flavor. I have no problems dialing out to 19.5 mils and holding another 2 mils for 1770 yards.

Use some modleing clay on the base where the rings will go , press the scope down into the clay and I leave about 1/4 inch between the bell and barrel. If you use caps put them on and mesure from them. Now measure and find the perfect set. To close and the recoil can cause the barrel and scope to bump.
