FYI garage door protection

Recommended Posts

A few months ago a friend had about 5k stolen from his garage in hunting gear. Someone earlier in the week was going door to door selling alarms and talked to his wife if they had a alarm on thier house and garage door. Not knowing his wife told them no they do not and were not intrested. I believe that night or soon after someone broke into thier garage by drilling a small hole into thier garage door and pulled the safety/emergency cord on thier garage door.

Well tonight like a dummy I locked my self out of my new home and could not figure out how to get in. I just moved in 2 weeks ago and had not had time to leave a key with the nieghbors or hide one. So I got to thinking about what happened to my buddies house, so I went over to my nieghbors (good people) and borrowed a drill and a wire clothes hanger. I told them I was locked out of my house and was going to break in. My Nieghbor wanted to come see, so he brought me a wire hanger and drill. I tapped a very small hole in the garage and fished the wire through where I believed the safety cord was hanging. I pulled on the wire hanger and I heard a "pop" noise. To my surprise I had it open first time under 15 seconds. My Nieghbor looked at me like I was a thief,, ha ha I had to convince him this was my first time.

Anyways, just a warning, remove this string if you care to do so. I was able to do it, so anyone can!!!

My garage is detached with a half dozen guard dogs around it. The dogs attack me monthly for practice. If some one made it in, they'd never find their way out.

Devan, great close up of your bear, looks brindle.

Good advise! On some garage doors you can slide something in (hanger, slimjim, etc.) the top crack of the door withou having to drill a hole. I tried a few years ago on mine and was able to easily grab the lever that the string is tied to. I simply used a few heavy zip ties to secure the lever to the frame, eliminating the ability for the lever to come down.

I wish I hadnt read this one. I forgot to lock my jeep the other day and sure enough some ahole let themselves in and made away with my wives phone and a crappy set of binos I had rolling around in there. I figured it was just jackass teenagers cruising the neighborhood checking for open doors and lowhanging fruit. Now I'm out of town for a few days and worried what I'll find when I get back.

Had the same thing happen years ago. I now have a Liftmaster door opener that attaches right to the shaft on the side of the door. Auto locking system as well. When door closes a steel bolt goes thru the frame and cant be moved unless with remote or manually by hand from inside garage. No more worries.

My alarm sensors are on both the garage doors.

When I leave I put a screw driver through the wheels and rail.

The outside handle is for decoration only.

That's the hot way to break in right now for the dirt bag criminals out there. I put a cross bolt lock on mine. It's now easier to break into my house than the garage.

I wish all thieves that steal from hard working people die a painful death by Cholla cactus.

I second that motion and move to also include the chitbag defense lawyers who screw the system every way they can in order to keepthis trash on the streets. Ive never seen a single cholla by itself, theres room for the council on the next one over.
