goinhuntn Report post Posted June 20, 2015 Hey guys I am just getting into long range shooting. I just purchased a Savage 111 LRH in 300 win mag & wanted to know what you recommend for scope base & rings. I haven't decided on a scope yet, but would like some recommendations as well. This rifle will be primarily for elk hunting with some recreational bench shooting. As far as hunting shots will not be taken longer than 500 yds, but would like to play around at longer ranges at the range. Any advice would be appreciated & thanks in advance. azsugarbear Report post Posted June 20, 2015 You say your limit is 500 yds, but I'm betting with a little practice that will be revised out to 800 yds. :-) You might get more relevant advice by giving the readers some price parameters. Most will tell you what you already know or suspect - glass is not the place to cut corners. This is one arena where you get what you pay for. Expect to pay at least $700 for a scope that will give you great glass with consistent, repeatable turrets for dialing. Some that come to mind are the Leupold VX-III series, the Sightron SIII series and the Vortex PST. The next step up would be a Nightforce NXS or Vortex Razor ($1,400-$1,600 used). Nestled in between would be the Nightforce SHV ($900-$1200). These are the scopes I am most comfortable recommending.
DesertBull Report post Posted June 20, 2015 I recently bought a Sightron SIII. It's been really good so far. Would recommend. I also want to try a Nightforce SHV. Buy once cry once when it comes to scopes IMO.
DesertBull Report post Posted June 20, 2015 I have had good luck with EGW bases and Warne Maxima rings so that is what I have on everything. A lot of people like the Burris Z rings. Have not tried them though.
QhunterAZ Report post Posted June 20, 2015 For rings and bases I like Warne, badger ordinance, night force, American Defense. Don't skimp , you want quality parts you can rely on. i am paying down a vortex gen2 razor 4.5-27x56 ebr2 mrad. No reason to buy cheep only to buy a second time. willhunt4coues Report post Posted June 22, 2015 I use Valdada Rings, Valdada 20 moa base, and Sightron SIII 6-24X50 FFP LRMOA scope. By far a great set up. I get 95 moa of elevation and wind age. The Sightron SIII SFP 6-24X50 will get you 100+ moa of elevation and windage. I have used Seekins, US Optics, Nightforce, ect for the rings and bases and can tell you from all the work I have done the Valdada are just as nice for a little less. GreyGhost85 Report post Posted June 22, 2015 i put a set of xtreme hardcore gear force recon rings on a similar rifle, just the 338 lapua version. i love them. they have a built in level also. they are pretty expensive, but rings and bases are not where you decide to go cheap
