Preventing Game Meat from Spoiling

Recommended Posts

pepper helps keep the flies off if you don't have game bags immediately once you get the hide off.

Hunting in unit 21 was always hot night or day. Elk take a lot longer to cool than deer will. One thing I have seen people make a mistake is they don't get the windpipe out and I have found that will spoil quicker than anything. We also took vinegar or pepper and put on meat to keep the flies off. Water never hurt any of my meat and not being so dry I didn't lose that dried out crust all over it.

Thank you to those that responded. I was able to harvest an Elk two days ago (2+ miles away from a road) and was able to save all of the meat with some of your recommendations. Wish you all a great year of hunting. (I am still shocked how fast flies came in while we were harvesting).

Pepper don't keep the flies off. You just can't see where they $h!t on it as easy if you pepper it. Lark.

Yes it does. Besides, a little fly chit never hurt anyone.

Agreed, pepper does work. I'm just not used to hunting at a time of the year that has flies. The other thing to mention was within an hour of taking the elk we had 5-6 buzzards and 2-3 Ravens circling overhead.
