I actually drew a rifle deer tag!

Recommended Posts

I drew a late season hunt in Nor Cal. It's an easy hunt to draw, but I'm still amazed with my luck. If we get weather it's a great hunt, if not it's tough. I'm just excited that I get to hunt with the rifle this year.

Nice! What unit did you get? Nor Cal is on my list for 2016 or 2017, I need a blacktail for my deerslam I'm working on.

It's a mule deer hunt, but Blacktails mix in. I've killed a few blacktails with my bow. We hunt A zone sometimes, those are all blacktails. My friend lives in Sonoma valley, so we hunt pigs and blacktail there. This is supposed to be a fun hunt because the deer are migrating.

It's the G1 tag, late season in C4 I believe. Once you draw the tag, you then draw for access which can be key to success. Hunt has a 35% success rate and some really good deer get killed if the migration works out right. After day 3, it's a meat hunt for me. An excuse to go hang out with my friends up there and hopefully bring some meat home. Bad thing about the hunt is it's impossible to scout. Being a migration hunt, there are literarily no bucks there during the summer.

Ever hunted the trinity alps? Its big enough that I have a hard time thinking you cant find some solitude even though I know it gets hit pretty hard by the cali bt hunters. I corresponded with a guy from Jesse's hunting forum a few years ago that said once you get past 5 miles, you're pretty much alone. He shot a huge one in there.

I fished the Tinity Alps one year. Great fishing in several lakes and got skunked on Stealhead in the Trinity River. Did hook a jack salmon that jumped off and several Browns. Beautiful country, plenty of weird mountain hippies up there like every other place in CA though.

If you don't do well, and still want a black tail, are able to back pack I would look at the Yolla Bolly- Middle Ell Wilderness. There used to be some huge bucks in there back in the mid 80s thru 90s. Good luck on your hunt.

I've killed several blacktail, but will keep that in mind. I would like to get a good blacktail someday. A backpack hunt chasing them would be a lot of fun.

im planning on giving it a go next year for the archery hunt. Let me know if you're interested in carpooling. Helluva long drive to either trinity alps or yolla bolla from anywhere in Arizona.

I have several good friends in Nor Cal so I go every year. I buy a license every year because I'm gaining sheep, pronghorn and Tule Elk points there plus I hunt chukar across the border in The Mojave National Preserve.

I'd be up for a black tail specific hunt one of these days. I also have access to private land where we hunt pigs.
