Tree Stands or Ground Blinds?

Recommended Posts

That's a great question and I am also curious to see what some of the guy's opinions are.

I have had succes using both ground and tree stands and I am starting to really like the tree stands.

The pop ups have worked great as well and they are easy to set up also if there aren't any trees around

you are kinda screwed with the tree stand.

I have heard some guy's mention that with the pop ups they are worried about scent control but I have

not had that problem yet.

My $.02

I really like to hunt out of a tree stand because I can't hear @*&$ and it gives me a chance to see a animal coming in. But,

I have a bad back and find it hard to sit still so the ground blind really works out better for me.

I have had whitetail within 15 yards of me while sitting in a blind and have evan drawn my bow to see how they would react.

Blinds are nice if the weather is on the crumy side.

People swear by the double bull blinds but I use the Ameristep Brickhouse because it is alot cheaper and has worked just as well.

Hope this helps

Mike

Choose a tree stand if you have a chance! you can hide better, see better and keep your scent out of the way better. But there is not always a good tree available. So you have to just do what you can. What many people don't think about while setting a stand or blind is what if a bunch of does come in first? What if you have to put up with many animals that you don't want to spook before the one you want comes in or presents a shot? I would much rather be in a tree stand in that case.

I prefer treestands.

Keeps your scent away, you can see better and hear alot better. The trouble with the blinds is that is where the deer are gonna be looking for danger, at ground level. We don't live back east where you have to worry about those seasoned bucks looking up in the trees for danger. Also the trouble I find sitting in a blind is you tend to take advantage of the room inside compared to a treestand and move around alot, and I always eventually end up asleep, ha ha. But sitting in the same spot moving one leg at a time for hours, 20 plus feet above the ground, sleep is pretty hard to come by.

If you really want to have a good time, I'd recommend spot and stalk. Those hours sure can drag on in a blind/stand when you could be out chasing them on the ground!!! Good Luck.

If you are hunting in the pines and are capable of climbing, definately a tree stand. Ifyou are hunting in the scrub oak, juniper, or mesquite thickets (trees not large enough to hang a stand) try backing a tripod stand into one of them. I have had terrific luck with that tactic. I have had deer a foot from the base of it and not spook, and my boy who shall remain nameless was able to shoot at three different bucks in one day from the same set up, not very likely when at nose, eye, and ear level. Just one humble hunters opinion. NOTE: Hunting from a tripod will not improve your shooting ability. What you do with it once the deer is infront of you is left up soley to you. ( I still love you Hal )

Ground blinds...

Ok I know it's WAY busy and should definetely blend in a bit better, but

you'd be surprised what you can get away with elk, deer seem a bit more 'perceptive'.

Build a nice blind one season. Let mother nature take it's course (weather, wind , rain) and come back the next season with a bit of tweaking and it can be fantastic...

I realy don't have much experience with ether one but I did use a friends "tree lounge" once and I liked it alot. For those of you who use tree stands do you like the fixed or climbing stands? I think I would go with a climber and probable a Tree Lounge. It was very comfortable, even with my bad back, and easy to climb with.

Given that Coues deer move all day I think it is about comfort... Crazy(tommy) loves treestands that are 10 miles high.. Me on the other hand am more comfortable on the ground....

Treestands do have the advantage of having scent up high and giving you a better view of the area around you, but we have had at least a few of our members seriously injured falling out of treestands. Groundblinds are effective and safer. No risk of getting paralyzed or breaking bones sitting in a ground blind. Use no-scent sprays to avoid the problem of human scent. Duwane Adams swears by the new double bull blinds and says they control scent perfectly. He told me he has coues walk within a few yards of his blinds. I have had coues (and elk, turkey, coyote, etc) walk within yards of me when I was in ground blinds made of natural materials. The hard part is finding the right time to draw without them seeing you. That's when those double bull blinds are particularly effective since they have screening that blocks the animals view and yet you can shoot through it.

I say don't limit yourself to one or the other. Some spots lend themselves to ground blinds & others to treestands. All depends on the location for me.

I dont have experience with either types but will this year. I bought a Double Bull blind and am going to give it a serious shot this year. I would assume that each type has its own benefits depending on the terrain..............Allen.........

Ground blind is the way to go. You can drink beer. You can have a big lunch. You can take a nap lying down. You can stay much longer. You can shoot from different positions. You can take pictures. Ect. Why is it as soon as I'm in a tree stand I have to take a pee? Even if I just went.

Last Dec. someone stole my treestand. Then I had a 90" walk by me on the ground at 8 feet while behind nothing. Then I bought a ground blind, sat in a chair, put a wool blanket over my lap and fired up a butane camp stove between my legs - as low as it would go - kept my hands and the rest of me warm and comfortable the whole time, and sat through those two snowy, snowy days (about two feet where I was) and was happy! Spent time reflecting back to the days when I would get so cold in a tree stand that I would pray for a safe decent from the tree - cause I was so cold I could hardly move! Mattys281 is right about not limiting yourself. Maybe in Sept I'll climb a tree and sit on the ground in December, but then again I liked Amanda's comment about the difficulty of getting your draw while not behind the cover of a ground blind.

I think I've been spoiled!

I use the little mushroom shaped cat heater

Does not put out a lot of heat but you can warm your hands

and I like the idea of a blanket. I will give that a try

these little heaters make no noise so there great in a blind.

Blinds do get pretty warm so for the early hunts I would use a tree stand
