naturegirl Report post Posted June 5, 2015 I've been to Boyce Thompson Arboretum a few times over the years, but it has been quite awhile since the last time I went. I fondly remember my first visit when my next door neighbor invited me along on their family trip to the arboretum. I was absolutely amazed with the rattlesnake that was sunning right next to the rock-lined path. My daughter & I went to the arboretum last weekend to attend a lizard walk. The volunteer host Wild Man Phil was awesome and is also the owner of Stumpy the Tortoise. I've met Stumpy in the past and I was impressed with how well he gets along with 3 legs and 1 wheel. Phil's son is already volunteering at the arboretum and sharing his knowledge. What better way for children to learn than from other children My daughter & I took along our cameras as picture opportunities were plentiful. We also learned a lot about lizards. It turns out the tails I've accidentally pulled off will regrow most times, but it can inhibit their chances of mating in the future. It appears that many female lizards can tell if a male's tail has been broke and regrown. If it's a regrown tail, most times she will choose another male with a natural tail. The push-ups lizards often do are territorial gestures and not exercises like I may have possibly thought. We ended the trip with a picnic lunch under a tree at the arboretum's picnic area where there were a few birds vying our attention. Below are some photos taken at the park. Dogs are welcome and water dishes (for the dogs) are provided at each drinking fountain.
